The emergency medicine ultrasound fellowship offered at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital is designed for Emergency Medicine residency-trained graduates who are interested in becoming subject matter experts in the field of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). This one-year fellowship is designed to provide junior faculty with in-depth knowledge and skills in the clinical use of POCUS as well as an opportunity to develop skills in teaching, administration, and research.

Summary

The Medical Education Fellow is responsible to develop, implement and evaluate educational programs. Design and evaluate curricula, teach and assess learners of multiple levels (UME, GME, faculty). Demonstrate effective resident management and leadership skills. Design, implement and study innovation in medical education. Address policy and accreditation issues and opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new and evidence-based methods to facilitate and assess learning. Complete teaching shifts. Assess resident clinical performance and provide appropriate feedback to help improve their performance. Attend and be an active participant of EM residency didactics (fellows will be protected for conference). Serve as a member of the conference planning committee and evaluate the residency didactic curriculum. Appraise resident lectures and provide appropriate feedback. Deliver lectures during residency didactics. Deliver grand rounds.
  • Lead small group sessions. Design and participate in simulation-based education. Lead procedural-based education during orientation. Deliver Emergency Medicine Medical Student Pathway Lectures. Mentor medical student in a research project involved in medical education during their Pathways course as assigned. Assess residents on the EM milestones and participate in resident evaluation through the Clinical Competency Committee. Participate in the Program Evaluation Committee and recommend changes within the residency program.
  • Apply mentorship skills to guide and advise residents by serving as a resident advisor and mentor. Attend ACEP Teaching Fellowship course and CORD Academic Assembly. Apply for the UM/JMH faculty discussant role at CORD's clinical pathologic case competition. Participate in the screening and evaluation of residency applicants.
  • Participate in recruitment efforts and the applicant interview process. May apply their additional CME funding for presentations and for specialized faculty development courses that advance an individual fellow's professional development. Participate in medical student mentorship as needed.
  • Select an area of expertise and design a scholarly project with the intent of publishing/presenting at an EM conference such as CORD. Evaluate and critique articles in the education literature. Lead the discussion of one relevant article in education literature during core-faculty Meetings.
  • Assist in designing research proposals or education scholarship opportunities with the education leadership. Serve as a Junior Assistant Program Director and attend monthly academic residency program meetings. If applicable, participate in CORD through lecturing, presentation of research, or committee involvement. Attend monthly meetings with fellowship directors to ensure adequate progress. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience

Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience. Will be required fulfill 864 clinical hours annually.

Education

Doctorate degree in Medicine is required. Successful Completion of a 3 or 4 year ACGME Emergency Medicine Residency training program is required.

Credentials

Board Eligible or Board Certified in Emergency is required.

BLS, ACLS, ATLSfrom American Heart Association with at least 6 months validity from start date or must be renewed prior to start.
