Employment Type: Full-Time, Benefits Eligible

Months Worked Per School Year: 10

Work Days/Hours: M-F, 8am-4pm, occasional after-school and weekend work

Start Date: August 2024

Job Summary:

Paideia is a K-12 college preparatory school of over 1,000 students in the Emory University area of Atlanta; the junior high school enrolls 180 students. Junior high classes combine 7th and 8th grade students into homebase classes where they are taught language arts and social studies by the two homebase classroom teachers. Students leave the homebase for instruction in modern languages, math, music, art, P.E. and science. The program combines close contact and support from homeroom teachers with independence, individual responsibility, and a wide range of choices. It demands a lot from students, but does so in relaxed surroundings in which kids can feel at home. It does an excellent job teaching basic skills like math and writing, but it also has a creative curriculum designed to incorporate personal and social conflicts and develop self-awareness and expression.

The development of social skills is an important part of every learning experience at Paideia. Most academic work at this level is carried out through individually prescribed instruction in mixed-age or multi-age classrooms that emphasize individual challenge and achievement rather than competition.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Use a variety of reading assessment tools to look closely at reading comprehension with specific groups of students in small group settings
  • Facilitate the transition for select students from Elementary to Junior High and Junior High to High School that require learning support
  • Collect and synthesize information about students to communicate to home-base teachers, principals, and parents
  • Create accommodations profiles for students and communicate with each student's teachers about accommodations
  • Provide learning support to students that targets breakdown points and demystifies student about their learning strengths and challenges
  • Meet with students, families, and teachers to share concerns, identify learning issues, problem solve, strategize and note progress
  • Facilitate staffings with teachers of identified students to discuss impact of student's learning profiles
  • Staff development on general learning issues and the impact on learning with emphasis on bypass strategies
  • Promote observational practice, descriptive review, and inquiry as a way to assess students through conversations at school
  • Identify when an outside evaluation would be useful and coordinate with families
  • Follow up on psycho-educational reports with families, students, and teachers
  • Assist admissions with understanding information about candidates with learning differences
  • Oversee tutoring referrals and encourage communication between tutors and school
  • Teach a class in the applicant's experienced field or in reading and writing specialty, along with the JH Short Term.
  • Other duties as assigned in support of Paideia's mission to provide the best educational experience for the school's students, families, and community. Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants should have at least 3-5 years working with Upper Elementary / Junior High aged students in the areas specified above. BA is required, Masters Preferred.

    Application Notes:

Interested applicants should submit a resume, cover letter and contact information for three professional references via our online application.

Salary is commensurate with education and experience. A robust benefits package is offered for benefits-eligible positions. Paideia School is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
