Payment: $100 stipend for each approved match observation

Overview of the United Soccer League (USL)

The United Soccer League (USL) is the central hub of American soccer, reaching over 200 communities throughout the United States. It stands as the pioneering soccer entity in the country by establishing a seamless pathway for both male and female players from youth to professional levels, all within a unified framework. This comprehensive setup comprises three professional leagues: USL Super League (women), USL Championship (men), and USL League One (men); two pre-professional leagues: USL League Two (men) and the USL W League (women); and two youth platforms: USL Academy and USL Youth. Vibrant, pivotal, and engaging, the USL is committed to delivering an all-encompassing and memorable soccer journey for players, enthusiasts, and communities across our expanding soccer landscape.

Position Purpose

The United Soccer League is in search of a Match Observer (MO) who can embody the essence of the USL in a professional and unbiased manner within each distinct market. The Match Observer holds the responsibility of documenting and reporting the match day procedures and operations of clubs, along with flagging any infractions of league protocols. Additionally, the MO will monitor compliance with competition standards from both teams and report any instances of unprofessional conduct from players, coaches, and staff, whether on or off the field.

Duties and Responsibilities

Key duties include, but are not restricted to:

  • Evaluate matches during the regular season (March-October) as stipulated by the USL and any relevant playoff fixtures.
  • Thoroughly document and report any breaches of minimum standards to USL personnel.
  • Conduct inspections at the venue to ensure adherence to league and federation regulations.
  • Record safety and security incidents and identify potential risks.
  • Assess the condition and setup of league broadcasting equipment on-site.
  • Hold teams accountable for upholding professional benchmarks.
  • Document and report potential disciplinary incidents.
  • Comply with local regulations regarding public safety measures such as mask-wearing, temperature screenings, and social distancing.

Qualifications

  • Essential knowledge of soccer.
  • Preferably, a background in soccer coaching or administration.
  • Capable of handling confidential information with potential organizational impact.
  • Effective communication skills and a commitment to meeting strict league deadlines.
  • Flexible availability including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
  • Minimum age requirement of 21 years.
  • Residence within a 50-mile radius of the designated market.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.

Important Information for Independent Contractors

  • Match Observers will receive a fixed $100 USD per successfully completed match observation.
  • Being a Match Observer Independent Contractor means you operate as a vendor rather than an employee of USL, tasked with executing match observations.
  • Compulsory assessment of matches throughout the regular season (March-October) and any relevant playoff games.
