Job Description

ATS' Global Services team is a dynamic, change-leading team that drives the delivery of value-driven Services to our customers worldwide. As a member of a highly motivated, dynamic, multi-disciplined team, you will design and develop world-class aftermarket automation solutions. The Mechanical Designer – Team Lead is responsible for all mechanical design activity in the ATS Global Services – North American Service Center. Duties involve contributing to design changes for retrofit projects, generating concept design, releasing drawings for production, providing input for quoting design work effort, and supporting the service team.

Responsibilities

Team Lead:

  • General supervision, training, and guidance of all mechanical designers that are part of the team.
  • Collaborates with applications engineering team in support of proposals and owns the jobs won from concept to through-life support.
  • Works with other members of the mechanical design department and other teams to continuously improve methods and tools for mechanical design, driving enhanced modularity, standardization, and functionality.
  • Works with members of the management team to ensure that costs, schedules, and budgets are adhered to or improved upon.
  • Completes annual performance review process for all team members ensuring both technical and behavioral assessments are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Assigns their team to the day-to-day direct labor activities.
  • Ensures, checks, and approves that all work produced by the design team members is acceptable based on functionality, adherence to standards, accuracy, completeness, and consideration for safety.
  • Approves all material requisitions for projects assigned to their team.
  • Assists with information and any appropriate execution improvement plans provided to program management for programs assigned to their team.
  • Ensures that scheduled milestones relating to mechanical design are achieved.
  • Provides primary technical assessments of team members for performance evaluations.
  • Collaborate with Operations Manager to set goals and manage successful performance for their team members.
  • Leads and mentors their team members.
  • Reviews and evaluates new mechanical design related products to provide a cost effective, and up-to-date mechanical solution.

Mechanical Designer:

  • Works with other members of the project team, both ATS and non-ATS, to develop a mechanical design that provides the functionality required, based on ATS standards and the customers' specifications.
  • Participates in development and implementation of tools, methods and modules ensuring standards maintained.
  • Works with team members, customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers, and electricians to solve problems to provide the customer with a product or service compliant with their requirements.
  • Create drawings of existing tooling using precision measuring devices such as verniers and micrometers.
  • Assist the fabricators, machinists, toolmakers, and electricians in the debug, integration, resolving problems, and completion of systems.
  • Produce working drawings, detail drawings and bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies or product, using AutoCAD and Solid Works.
  • Select appropriate purchased components for mechanical assemblies and create requisitions with appropriate delivery dates.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness etc. in the development of equipment, processes, and products.
  • Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc.
  • Formalize and update drawing documentation.
  • Ensures that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
Qualifications
  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 10 years of mechanical design experience.
  • Working knowledge of common machine shop techniques.
  • Well versed in drafting principles.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Solid Works.
  • Capable of designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.
  • Well versed in the use of electrical devices (i.e. switches, load cells, LVDT's, etc.), pneumatics and hydraulics.
  • Must be capable of giving and taking directions.
  • Ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design issues.
  • Ability to work effectively with both internal cross functional teams and customers according to deadlines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, & Excel.
  • Ability to read, speak, write, & understand English in a professional manner.
  • Strong initiative, innovative, and keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills; Experience working with customers to resolve problems.
  • Willingness and ability to work at a customer site in California for a 6-month project (return trips home will be provided) and 10% thereafter.
  • Must be eligible and able to travel domestically & internationally within 30 days from hire date and legally eligible to operate a vehicle, as this is an essential job function.
