Overview

The Africana Center at Tufts University works to implement programs designed to encourage and support the intellectual and individual growth and awareness of all Tufts Undergraduates. These programs include lectures, workshops, concerts, and films, as well as a range of additional activities and programming that reflect and celebrate the intellectual and cultural traditions of people in the African Diaspora. The Center also sponsors programs that promote an understanding of and respect for diversity, multiculturalism, and equity issues.

What You'll Do

The Associate Director is a student facing role that supports the Africana Center through the development and implementation of community engagement programs that uplift students of African descent and their many intersecting identities (i.e., gender, class, disability, sexual orientation, citizenship/nationality). The Associate Director works closely with the Senior Director and will handle the below duties:

  • Manage projects and programs connected to the Africana Center and meets regularly with students for individual support needs.
  • Collaborate with student-facing resources and departments including other identity-based resources, Residential Life and Learning, Student Affairs Office, Counseling and Mental Health Services, Career Center, Global Education, Financial Aid, Tufts University faculty, the CARE office, and other departments within and beyond the Division.
  • Writes grants and seeks funding sources for center programs and initiatives.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Knowledge and skills as typically acquired by a Bachelor's degree; superb judgment, demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial and oral and written communication skills;
  • 5 years relevant experience supporting student growth and development within an educational setting, preferably within a selective university or liberal arts college environment;
  • 3 years relevant experience developing student facing programs, preferably in a university setting.
  • Awareness of how social identities will impact the experience of college students; strong background in understanding issues impacting the experience of students historically underrepresented at Tufts, including students of color, first-generation and undocumented students; and an awareness of various models for identity-based resource centers.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, imagination, and effectiveness in developing educational and community programs; facility in designing programs and resources that consider cultural constructions of race as it intersects with gender, class, ethnicity, sexual identity, religion, and ability.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree preferred with 3+ years related experience

Pay Range
Minimum $63,600.00, Midpoint $79,500.00, Maximum $95,400.00

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
