Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN is seeking a 4 th year extern in pediatric audiology for the school year.

Le Bonheur is ranked as one of the nation's top children's hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, and is the premiere children's hospital for Memphis and the surrounding areas. Audiology services at Le Bonheur are provided to children ages birth to 21 years at two locations. Patients are seen as inpatient, outpatient, through busy ENT clinics and in the operating room.

The extern will gain extensive experience in pediatric audiology, including diagnostics, electrophysiology, hearing aids and cochlear implants while under the supervision of 5 experienced pediatric audiologists.


Interested applicants should be motivated, focused, energetic and organized, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The position will be a 12-month contract, with an approximate start date of June 1, 2025.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: For consideration, applicants are required to have:
Proficiency in conventional audiometry
Experience with otoacoustic emissions, acoustic reflex testing, and auditory brainstem response testing
Experience with visual reinforcement and conditioned play audiometry, both as tester and test assistant
Experience with hearing aid selection, fitting, orientation and troubleshooting
Goal of becoming a pediatric audiologist Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Externs will graduate with:

  • Independence in working with children with hearing loss and their families
  • Independence in VRA, CPA, OAE and ABR testing
  • Independence in pediatric hearing aid evaluation, selection, fitting, orientation and follow-up
  • Independence in completing newborn hearing screenings and diagnostic testing in the NICU
  • Independence in completing ABRs under general anesthesia in the OR
  • Exposure to cochlear implant candidacy evaluations and follow-up
  • Confidence with a variety of pediatric patients, including outpatients, ENT patients, inpatients, and patients seen in the operating room Clinical opportunities that will be given to the extern:
