Blast Room Operator

Working location: Griffin, GA USA

General Description

The Blast Operator must perform a skilled level of work in blasting rolls in preparation for covering. Assignments are received in the form of written instructions through the schedule board and the plant factory order. Work methods and procedures are determined by company policy thru the SPI manual. On the job training will be provided that meets these specification and requirements and the employee is expected to maintain these standards after completion of training period.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

Essential Functions:

  • Basic knowledge of blast equipment

Knowledge of:

  • Job related materials.
  • The tools, materials, methods, and standard practices of the blasting.
  • The hazards and safety precautions of operating moving equipment.

Ability to:

  • Learn to operate overhead crane and the use of the proper cables according to the load requirements.
  • Learn to properly operate a forklift.
  • Learn how to read the schedule board to identify when to prepare for covering.
  • How to read a factory order and to identify the correct roll by matching the serial number to the order prior to loading onto the roll carts.
  • How to read the factory order for areas to blast and whether this includes just roll face or ends and/or hubs.
  • How to read a diameter tape.
  • The proper set up of the machine to include roll carts, blast gun arm and end stops. This will include many different and varied roll types.
  • How to protect varied parts of the roll to prevent damage from the abrasive media.
  • How to set up the feed rates and shot flow to obtain the surface finish measurements that meet SPI specifications.
  • How to take and record those measurements on a factory order.
  • How to read the factory order for cementing instructions.
  • How to properly apply the cements as per the factory order.
  • How to load, clean, maintain and service the blast room equipment.
  • Locate the roll that is in the schedule and match the serial number of the roll to the factory order.
  • Check the cables for the correct weight of the roll install the cables on the crane and lift the roll and place in the turning device.
  • Check the diameter of the roll on the drive end, center and tailstock end of the roll. Check the face length and compare all values to the order.
  • Check the vent plugs to insure they have been removed or are at least loose. Check for liquid in roll body prior to putting roll into the booth.
  • Set the roll up on the roll support carts.
  • Move the roll into the room with the forklift.
  • Set up the blast arm at the proper distance and angle.
  • Turn on roll, set feed rate and begin blast cycle.
  • Watch for roll to complete the cycle and shut down when complete.
  • Enter room with roll off and visually inspect blasted surface. If the roll looks good prepare for hand blasting of ends.
  • Suit up with helmet, apron and gloves. Enter room with hand blast hose ready to use.
  • Work from the roll side that has rotation going away from you. Hand blast the ends while using the jog switch on the blast nozzle.
  • Once both ends are complete, exit the booth and remove all protective gear.
  • Check blasted surface with the RA meter to insure it meets specification.
  • Remove the overwrap that was applied to protect some surfaces of the roll.
  • Blow off the roll body and the roll carts before removing them from the booth.
  • Remove roll from the booth with the forklift.
  • Place roll and support stands with the crane and begin the cementing process per the factory order instructions.
  • If the roll won't be covered until the next day it can be covered with clean paper once the cement has dried sufficiently.
  • Clean work area and put away tools.
  • Mark the schedule ticket as blasted. Move on to next roll in the schedule.
  • Move roll to the extruder area.

Additional Requirements:

  • Maintain clean and safe work area.
  • Perform any other tasks as required by supervision
  • Overtime hours may be required.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 50 pounds or standing and /or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: High school Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: On the job training will be provided since the blasting process can vary due to product line and production environment.
