Overview

The Associate Director for Career Advising is a critical member of the Career Development team. This position provides individual and group advising and workshops for undergraduate students. This position also provides leadership within the Career Development team by providing direct supervision to a career advising professional.

Based on current staff alignment, this position serves as a primary liaison to science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines (STEM) disciplines. The individual will collaborate with the Employer Engagement team to cultivate job and internship development with STEM employers, and in developing career education programs with alumni and other professionals as participants to support career development of STEM students.

This individual will also have responsibility for general career advising, resource development, and relationship management.

Responsibilities

Leadership of STEM Career Advising and Programming – 50%

  • Provide career advising for undergraduate students on a wide range of career development topics including choice of concentration, skills assessment, internships, experiential learning opportunities, post-graduation employment and graduate school planning in both individual and group sessions
  • Assist students with the development of action plans and follow-up strategy
  • Administer instruments and utilize a variety of assessment tools (e.g. CliftonStrengths, MBTI, CareerExplorer, etc.) to support student development
  • Provide individual advising with a focus on active visioning and brainstorming exercises to help students clarify strengths, skills, values, and interests, and shed light on the career paths that best align with their vision
  • Develop and demonstrate expertise in science, technology, engineering, mathematics career options, identifying and connecting students with relevant employers and programs
  • Lead career panels and networking events to highlight career exploration, specifically related to STEM careers

Career Exploration Advising and Support â" 15%

  • Serve as a member of the career advising team, and assist with general drop-in advising and meeting with students engaging in career exploration
  • Develop resources and programming to support student career development
  • Serve as Career Development representative to various campus offices and programs

Building Campus and Employer Partnerships – 20%

  • Serve as liaison with the School of Engineering and its affiliated programs, the Keller Center, the Princeton Entrepreneurship Council, the High Meadows Environmental Institute, as well as all academic departments within the sciences, computer science, and mathematics
  • Consult and collaborate with faculty and other University partners on STEM committees and task forces throughout the University
  • Support the efforts of the employer outreach team in identifying key employers and alumni champions for the purpose of assisting STEM students in meeting their career goals
  • Engage in professional and regional association activities, submit articles for publication, and develop presentations at professional conferences

Supervision & Analysis – 15%

  • Supervise and mentor a career counselor, ensuring high quality service and advising
  • Maintain and update appointments, counseling notes, and schedules in Handshake system
  • Conduct periodic benchmarking to ensure best practices in career counseling, particularly in relation to STEM student programs
  • Research and report major recruiting and employment trends within engineering/technical/ science fields
  • Contribute to office assessment efforts, data compilation and analysis to identify and report student learning outcomes
  • Assist in the development of resources for STEM students

Qualifications

  • MasterâTMs Degree in related field
  • Three or more years of experience in career counseling/advising, program development, instruction or training in a higher education setting required; Five plus years preferred
  • Strong track record of developing innovative approaches to engage students, alumni, faculty, staff and employers
  • Knowledge of best practices within career development and the ability to tailor, adapt and evolve such practices to a complex, fast-paced, and evolving organization
  • Excellent communication skills, and ability to deliver effective presentations
  • A passion for advising students and working within a student-focused and student responsive environment
  • High levels of resourcefulness, influence/organizational savvy, execution skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to influence and build effective relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Experience in working with and supporting underrepresented populations, and deep commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion goals
  • Knowledge of STEM fields preferred
  • MBTI and CliftonStrengths certified preferred
  • Experience supervising professional staff preferred
