The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Data Engineer to join our team during a critical phase of our data transformation at Nabis. As we build a streaming data lake powered by Kafka event streams and transition our monolithic architecture into loosely coupled microservices, we need a visionary leader who can define, architect, and implement a scalable, extensible, and maintainable data platform.

Reporting to the CTO, you will build the tools and guardrails necessary for backend teams to develop robust data pipelines, collaborate with offshore data engineers and analysts to enhance our Business Intelligence and Analytics functions, and partner with Data Scientists to integrate ML functions into our marketplace and other business applications. You will make pragmatic choices to drive high business value velocity and collaborate with the product team on roadmap creation and execution.

Responsibilities

  • Define and implement a vision for a scalable, extensible, and maintainable data platform that meets the current and future needs of the company.
  • Lead the architecture and development of our streaming data lake and associated data pipelines, ensuring they are robust and future-proof.
  • Build tools and establish guardrails and standards for backend teams to create solid, efficient data pipelines within their services.
  • Work closely with offshore data engineers and analysts to power our Business Intelligence and Analytics functions.
  • Partner with Data Scientists to build and deploy machine learning functions that enhance our marketplace and other business applications.
  • Leverage your experience in the big data space to build a solid data architecture that can handle large volumes of data efficiently.
  • Articulate and effectively communicate the vision, progress, and challenges of the data platform to technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to other engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Foster a culture where feedback is actively sought and incorporated.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of proven experience in data engineering, with at least 3 years in a Principal Data Engineer or similar senior role.
  • Demonstrable experience in building and managing data platforms, including streaming data lakes and data pipelines.
  • Experience with AWS Redshift, Big Query, Snowflake, ADW, Airflow, dbt, Hevo, FiveTran, Hadoop, Hive, Presto, AWS Athena, Kafka, Flink, Spark, or similar tools.
  • Exposure to Nabis tech stack: Nabis Tech Stack.
  • Strong experience in building data pipelines using modern tools and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a proven track record of working effectively with offshore teams, data scientists, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to define,articulate and advocate for the technical vision to engineering teams, stakeholders, and executives alike.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions, drive consensus and mentor other engineers.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think strategically about data architecture and its impact on the business.
  • Experience working with Data Scientists to integrate machine learning functions into data platforms and business applications.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
