VA Careers - Licensed Practical Nurse:


Total-Rewards-of-an-Allied-Health-VA-Career-Licensed Practical Nurses will be expected to provide a range of patient care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents.

Incumbent will observe patients physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner.

Use of equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.

Licensed Practical Nurses communicate effectively with patients, their families and other health professionals.

May serve as a preceptor to new Licensed Practical Nurses by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.

Will recognize and react to emergent patient care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance, for example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

Based on assignment and grade, duties may include but are not limited to:

Accurately administers and records medications and treatments. This role includes review of need, contra-indications, allergies, and identifying and recording reactions/interactions.
Recognizes the pharmacological implications of medication administration for various age groups.

Demonstrates knowledge of the nursing process in administering patient care by collection of data and observing to determine patient needs, planning patient care based on needs, carrying out a developed plan of care, evaluating and adjusting plan of care to meet patient needs, and recognizes age-specific variations of clients and makes appropriate interventions.

Recognizes and quickly assesses emergency situations and makes appropriate and timely interventions.
Performs procedures accurately, completely, and safely according to White River Junction VAMC Nursing Practice and Policy.
Performs technical nursing skills such as complex dressing changes and care of various tubes and drainage systems. Monitors the condition of wounds and implements measures to prevent infection and facilitate wound healing.

Carries out the nursing process by utilizing knowledge of physiological, pharmacological, psychological, sociological principals, and considers age-specific variation and developmental needs.

Communicates to patients and families the rationale for treatment and therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Performs support duties for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which include preparing the patient, providing nursing care associated with the procedure, and monitoring the patient's condition.

Charts according to White River Junction VAMC guidelines and documents observation and nursing care administered with patient response on progress notes.

Reports pertinent information to appropriate personnel during the course of the day.
Receives, discusses, and communicates patient information upon transfer or change of tour of duty.
Establishes constructive relationships with individual patients to elicit feelings and attitudes.
Performs additional duties as assigned.

Pay:
Competitive salary and regular salary increases.

When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).


Paid Time Off:
37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.

Parental Leave:


After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.


Child Care Subsidy:


After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.
