The VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) is a Level I tertiary multi campus teaching facility affiliated with the University of Maryland - School of Medicine and over 100 educational institutions. Located next to the University of Maryland Medical Center with a walkway connecting the two facilities, the medical center maintains an active affiliation with the University in the sharing of staff, resources, and technology. Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center is the acute medical and surgical care facility for the VA Maryland Health Care System and offers a full range of inpatient, outpatient, and primary care services. As one of the most modern health care facilities in the country, the medical center offers veterans state-of-the-art medical technology, clinical services, and research programs. It is home to the world s first filmless radiology department, which allows health care providers to have nearly instant access to patient radiology images from anywhere in the facility and throughout the health care system.

The VAMHCS is currently seeking a full-time Endocrinologist with an adjunct/academic appointment possibility with the University of Maryland Medical Center. The VAMHCS Diabetes Endocrine Division consists of 3 physicians (this position is to recruit an addition 4th physician), 4 Nurse Practitioners, 1 clinical pharmacist 1 registered nurse and 1 registered dietitian. Trainees such as endocrine fellows, medical residents and students, pharmacy residents and nurse practitioner residents frequently rotate and participate in the clinical activities of the VAMHCS Diabetes-Endocrine Division. Several research activities are performed, as the VAMHCS Diabetes Endocrine Division conducts several important research studies, either clinical trials or epidemiological studies.

Basic Requirements :

Only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy, Non-citizens may be appointed.
Degree of Doctor of Medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
An equivalent degree from a school of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
For foreign medical graduates not covered in the previous 2 bullets above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

Preferred: Board Certification in Endocrinology by ABIM.

Major duties/functions include, but are not limited to:

Provides Endocrinology and Diabetes related transition of care from acute hospitalizations to the outpatient setting as well as outpatient referrals of patients at high risk for hospitalization in an acute/post-discharge clinic.
Provides Endocrinology related consultations, evaluating clinic patients and inpatients.
Participate in staff evaluations, communications, and counseling, if assigned by the Chief of Medicine.
Will represent the interests of the unit to appropriate committees.
Responsible and participate, if required, in educational programs for inpatient and outpatient unit personnel (endocrine fellows, medical students, medical residents, among others), update and develop inpatient and outpatient policies and procedures as required by the demands of the Medical Service.
Participate in research activities, if desired , and join a team with a strong interest in clinical diabetes research.
Demonstrate ethical conduct and serve as a positive role model to others at all levels of the organization.
Other clinical duties as assigned within the service or other areas of the hospital as required
