The School Counselor plays an essential role providing best in class counseling services for individuals with social, emotional, behavioral, or other needs that promote positive well-being. The School Counselor assists students individually and in groups with their educational, social, and personal growth by upholding the school's mission, and values, aligned to the Tribe's 2040 vision. Reporting to the Principal, the School Counselor creates therapeutic preventions and interventions for the purposes of fostering both positive mental health and learning environments for all students pre-K through fifth grade and provides a wide range of school counseling services to children and families that include screening and assessment, individual and group counseling, collaboration with families, and peer groups. The School Counselor collaborates with the school leadership teams to plan and implement site-based support and will work with or refer to other agencies as appropriate. The School Counselor supports the development of a safe, successful learning environment and positive school culture by partnering with teachers, administrators, staff and families.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Provides age-appropriate personal support enabling students, parents, and staff to make sound decisions about academics, emerging issues, opportunities, needs, and social emotional learning. Collaborates with school staff on appropriate interventions for students such as peer mediation, conflict mediation, restorative practices, socio-emotional learning (SEL), and trauma-informed supports. Researches and initiates partnerships with other Tribal Departments and approved external agencies to help foster better learning and support for the students.

2. Supports and guides students and parents in making healthy decisions about attendance, behavior, and other areas as needed by working directly with students and families individually and in small groups. Collaborates with the Parent and Family Coordinator, Education Specialists, teachers, and other support staff to develop and implement individualized education support plans as needed.

3. Establishes and maintains open and regular communication with students, parents, and guardians to keep them informed about student clinical goals and progress. Collaborates with teachers and school leadership to support a cohesive educational experience.

Attends IEPs, 504s, and Student Success Team meetings for students on their caseload, as necessary. Supports the creation of community and school programming, including, but not limited to parent workshops and community resources.

4. Consistently and routinely updates case files for students on their caseload, complying with all SMBMI guidelines and mandates around documentation, practice, and maintenance of clinical registration, including honoring mandated reporting duties.

5. Performs other duties as assigned to support efficient operation of department.

Education/Experience/Qualifications A master's degree from a regionally accredited institution is required.
A minimum of three years school counseling experience providing academic, social-emotional, and transitional support to students and families in grades TK to 8 is required.
MFT license is required
PPS credential preferred.
Must be willing and capable to learn the Serrano language.
Experience in early childhood development and student enrichment services is preferred.
Knowledge of and experience with Indian Tribes is preferred.
Demonstratable knowledge of policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior is required.
Must demonstrate a commitment to students and learning.
Must exhibit positive rapport with students that demonstrates skillful professional boundaries.
Must possess knowledge of various forms of intervention and prevention models for individuals and group therapeutic settings (ex. CBT, Play therapy, etc.).
Excellent relationship-building and management skills.
Strong problem-solving and consensus-building abilities.
Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively.
Excellent organization, time management and follow-up skills; high sense of urgency; demonstrated ability to successfully handle multiple projects concurrently.
Certificates/Licenses/Registrations MFT license is required.
A qualified candidate/employee must have and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the enterprise's insurance carrier.
As a condition of employment with the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Education Department, incumbents are required to undergo and successfully pass pre-employment and annual post-employment background investigation including, but not limited to, Live-Scan fingerprinting, drug screening and criminal history background check.
Must successfully undergo and maintain a current negative tuberculosis (TB) test.
