The Registered Nurse (RN) - Operating Room (OR) is a professional Registered Nurse who is self- directed and possesses effective skills in clinical assessment, critical thinking, problem resolution, and interpersonal relationships and communication.
The RN - OR works within the intraoperative care setting and demonstrates leadership in coordinating comprehensive and continuous patient-centered holistic care through active collaboration, communication, and coordination of VA and community-based resources and services.
While using the nursing process and evidence-based practice, the nurse demonstrates proficient nursing skills and knowledge essential in the management of acute, chronic, and clinically complex patients.
Duties and responsibilities are listed but not limited to the below:Functions in the role of circulator, scrub, pre-op holding, OR/SPS liaison, and charge nurse.
Effectively plans/coordinates patient treatment, flow, and throughput with daily staffing resources; makes assignments and directs staff activities based on patient needs, acuity, staff competency and skill-mix.
Performs duties of Service Leader/Alternate Service Leader as assigned. Updates and creates preference cards, maintains PAR levels for specialty supplies, and implants.Reviews surgical instrument sets for completion and requests additional instrumentation via Nurse Manager and SPS, monitors specialty peel pack instrument usage, etc.
As a service leader/alternate service leader, the nurse assures that 1) preference cards are complete and accurate; 2) instrument sets are current and complete; 3) supplies are anticipated and available.Applies the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to all aspects of patient care. Maintains current knowledge of and adheres to AORN standards, recommended practices, guidelines, and position statements.
Performs on-call duties.
Ensures equipment is functional before use. Removes broken equipment from services and immediately reports defective equipment to supervisor after placing the appropriate work order.
Assures emergency equipment and supplies are always available.
Participates in the pre-op "Time Out," to ensure correct patient, surgical site, and surgical procedure. Initiates the implant timeout per Universal Protocol.
Manages and labels medications and dilutions on sterile field, confirming drug, strength, diluent, and expiration date, in accordance with policies and guidelines.
Verifies specimen(s) with surgeon, labels specimen(s) with the nomenclature dictated by surgeon, verifies specimen(s) destination and verifies the label used for the specimen has the correct patient label and specimen nomenclature.
Notifies pathology staff of fresh/frozen specimens in accordance with policies and guidelines.Additional duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:
The population of male and female Veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over.
The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.
The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
