Summary

The Door County Soil & Water Conservation Department (SWCD) is looking for up to three field limited term employee (LTEs) for the 2024 season (~May-Oct.) to inventory and control priority invasive species infestations and provide outreach throughout Door County. This position will work under the direction of SWCD staff. Position availability is based on available grant funding.


Essential Functions:

The Door County Invasive Species Team offers advice, presentations, and training sessions on invasive species control on both public and private property. Each LTE will be assigned specific duties and responsibilities, but not every LTE is guaranteed to be assigned all the duties listed below.

Control priority invasive plant infestations that threaten private, with permission, and public properties including but not limited to Phragmites australis (Phrag), Reynoutria japonica (Japanese knotweed), Dipsacus Spp (Teasel Spp), Pastinaca sativa (Wild Parsnip), Cirsium palustre (European Marsh Thistle), Lythrum salicaria (Purple Loosestrife), and Celastrus orbiculatus (non-native bittersweet). Removal may include mechanical and chemical control methods.
LTE will work under the direction of a SWCD Conservationist. The LTE will work both independently and with other staff in the field, and may periodically work with citizen volunteers.
Conduct boat inspections and provide education to anglers and recreationalists for the Clean Boats Clean Waters program.
Inventory and mapping of new and existing invasive plant populations within Door County. Inventory will require the use of a handheld GPS unit or Arc collector app and detailed note-taking.
Maintain tools and equipment necessary to perform the above functions, and maintain records of all invasive management actions and herbicide applications.
An emphasis will be made to assist individual private landowners with proper control methods.

Responsibilities and Scope:
Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct work groups, including staff or volunteers.
Will work in variable weather conditions and may work on difficult terrain.
May require long hours in isolated settings.
Will require weekend work.
May require overnight work.
Ability to follow instructions for required tasks and results expected.
May be asked to provide invasive species educational opportunities to general public and private landowners through presentations and individual outreach.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma and 1 year training in science related field or related experience in land management.
Experience recognizing plant and animal species, especially invasive species found in Door County.
Experience operating various types of equipment.
Experience working in a team environment.
Must be able to have or obtain a valid driver's license.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge & Skills
BA/BS or Associates degree in natural resource management, environmental studies, biology, land management, scientific research, or related field OR 1-2 years training in science related or land management field.
Experience working with, or knowledge of natural systems, especially plant or invasive species knowledge.
Herbicide certifications in Right of Ways and Aquatics through the Depart. of Agriculture Trade and Consumer protection.
Experience working in a team environment.
Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
Microsoft suite familiarity, including database and ArcGIS spatial mapping knowledge preferred.
Ability to provide a variety of information through written spoken and visual means to staff and partners. Strong interpersonal skills favored for interaction with volunteers and general public.
