Job Summary:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Assistant Cook to join our crew on the Schooner Mary Day, of Camden, Maine. As an integral part of our culinary team, you will assist the Head Chef in preparing delicious meals for our passengers and crew. This is an excellent opportunity to work on a unique and adventurous vessel, exploring Maine's stunning coastal waters while developing your culinary skills. As an entry level position working on a traditionally rigged sailing vessel, it's a great way to "learn the ropes" of sailing a schooner.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Head Chef in meal planning, food preparation, and presentation
  • Assist in meal preparation for up to 28 passengers and 7 crew members
  • Clear and clean passenger dishes, allowing guests to be involved as much as possible
  • Maintain a clean and organized galley (kitchen) and main saloon (dining) area
  • Order and inventory food supplies, as needed
  • Assist with menu planning and special dietary requests
  • Provide exceptional customer service to passengers and crew
  • Participate in vessel maintenance and cleaning duties as needed
  • Assistant cook participates in night watch duty during cruises, as well as boarding day duty when in port.

Requirements:

  • Experience in a commercial kitchen or similar environment helpful
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Physical stamina to lift 50 pounds, stand for long periods and work in a small kitchen space
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities on a small vessel
  • Willingness to learn and take direction from the Head Chef
  • Must be friendly and willing to help guests and fellow crew members when needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on a sailing vessel or in the hospitality industry
  • Experience with small kitchen operations
  • Ability to work in a small space with limited storage and equipment

As a Coast Guard inspected vessel, Schooner Mary Day, adheres to federal laws regarding drug use by implementing a zero-tolerance policy for illegal substances among its crew members and passengers.
