Position: Adjunct Professor of English

Department: English

Status: Part Time

Position Summary:

The Adjunct Professor of English will work as needed in the Department of English within the College of Arts & Sciences. Classes will be in-person on main campus and include 1-3 sections a semester of the same course in Academic Writing (First-Year Composition) as part of the core curriculum. Courses in Academic Writing include the following:

English 100 – An intensive course of practice in writing fundamentals as preparation for academic writing.

English 101 – This course prepares students for academic writing. Students will practice writing papers requiring summary, synthesis, argument, research and documentation in MLA style. The course is designed to improve the clarity, concision, structure, and logic of student writing.

English 102 – This course develops students' critical reading, writing, and research skills by examining a variety of literary works and genres.

Teaching experience, commitment to excellence, innovation in undergraduate teaching, and an appreciation for the broad intellectual community of an excellent liberal arts education required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Follow guidelines for each course provided by department; use syllabi and policy templates.
Develop and implement curriculum, inclusive of departmental learning objectives, for in-person instruction.
Develop and manage course materials using textbook provided by the department chair; use Blackboard Learning System
Evaluate student work, administer tests, assignments and other exercises that permit measurement of knowledge, abilities, and/or performance relative to the course learning objectives.
Support student accommodations outlined by Office of Student Success, Disability Services
Complete student record keeping in a timely and accurate manner, including grades and attendance.
Post grades as required by Registrar following procedures and policies.
Maintain timely communications with students and staff at all times.
Interact with students in a positive manner, listen effectively, field questions pertaining to subject matter.
Perform departmental assessment for SACSCOC.
Administer final exams according to university guidelines.
Participate in departmental, faculty and staff meetings as requested.
Exercise independent judgment and maintain strict confidentiality.
Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to; Title IX, and Information Security including FERPA, and other state and federal regulations.

Education/Experience:

M.A. or M.Ed. in English, or a Master's degree in a related field, with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in English required.
Teaching experience in both academic writing and introduction to literature strongly preferred, writing center experience a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to teach writing within practices and guidelines of the department in a rapidly changing writing environment.
Ability to communicate effectively to all groups through both oral and written channels.
Strong computer skills and the ability to learn, utilize, or adapt to new and emerging technology, including awareness of the pros and cons of AI and ChatGPT
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and common methods of digital communication including web/text/chat platforms.
Knowledge of Blackboard Learning Management System or ability to learn Blackboard.
Ability to adapt to changing student needs.
Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with, faculty, staff, students, university officials and the public.
Exercise independent judgement and maintain strict confidentiality as necessary.
Ability to work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people.
This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University
Must be capable of working remotely from the continental U.S. or Hawaii. This role cannot be performed in Alaska, California, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Neveda, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin.
