Amgen's cardiometabolic team is an innovative target discovery and translational research unit with a focus on identifying novel targets for development of groundbreaking therapies for patients with obesity and associated cardiometabolic diseases. We employ advanced computational biology, state-of-the-art discovery screening technologies, genetics, and human-centric cell systems to dissect pathophysiology and identify novel drug targets
In this vital role you will drive the development of genome-wide strategies in human-derived central nervous system (CNS) models, with an overarching aim to characterize genes and genetic regulatory circuits involved in neuronal nutrient sensing and signaling.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish and validate innovative CNS disease models relevant to obesity using human derived neuronal cell lines and/or iPSCs.
- Explore mechanism of action of novel CNS targets to build scientific evidence through innovative in vitro mechanistic experimentation.
- Develop robust and reproducible cellular assays to enable large scale screening for target identification and apply assays to validate hits using genetic manipulation and genome engineering techniques for up or down regulation of target gene expression.
- Provide subject matter expertise to internal colleagues and external collaborators.
- Foster collaborations both externally and internally to establish strong partnerships and external networks

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree PhD OR PharmD OR MD [and relevant post-doc where applicable]
Or
Master's degree and 3 years of related experience
Or
Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in the natural sciences with 5 years relevant post doc/industry experience or a BSc/MSc degree with notable experience supporting CNS related drug screening efforts to achieve successful breakthroughs and conclusions.
- Extensive track record of hands-on experience working with CNS derived in vitro systems
- Expert knowledge of neuronal biology or neurodegeneration
- Planned and performed CRISPR-Cas9, RNAi, or compound screening projects to deliver high quality, robust and well characterized screening assays.
- Experience in pooled and/or arrayed high-throughput assays and accompanying analysis of large-scale screening (data QC, transformation, normalization, hit identification, statistical analysis) to derive biological insight. More advanced bioinformatic abilities are beneficial.
- Demonstrated experience using assay technologies (e.g., luminescence, fluorescence, TR-FRET, AlphaLISA or high-content analysis).
- Evidence of scientific productivity and impact through your own personal contributions leading to projects reaching significant breakthroughs/publications.
- Entrepreneurial mind-set, problem-solving skills, documented presentation and communication skills, and the ability to understand complex biological systems.
- Standout colleague and self-starter and be strongly motivated to explore new ideas and methods to drive innovation
- General knowledge of metabolic diseases (obesity, diabetes, MASH, or associated comorbidities)
- Understanding of the preclinical drug discovery process, how to progress hit/targets from identification and validation a benefit

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
