Professor of Practice in Data

Location:
Uptown Campus, Tulane University, New Orleans, LA
Open Date:
Oct 1, 2023
Description:

The Connolly Alexander Institute for Data Science (CAIDS) seeks to hire a Professor of Practice in Data, who will teach multi-disciplinary courses in data literacy, presentation, management, or analysis. CAIDS is a new Institute at Tulane University that promotes, teaches, and supports data literacy and data science, for students, faculty, and with the broader community. CAIDS programming will include courses, workshops, grants, academic programming, and events on data literacy, analysis, or management. For more information on CAIDS, see

This position has a teaching load of two courses per semester (i.e., a 2/2), which is the same teaching load as most tenure-track faculty at Tulane University. The PoP would be expected to teach DATA 1010 "Introduction to Data". This course seeks to be accessible to students of all backgrounds and abilities and will teach them fundamental skills in data literacy, analysis, and presentation. The Professor of Practice will also develop and teach one or two multi-disciplinary courses in data analysis, presentation, or management in their areas of interest or expertise. We are particularly interested in courses on AI, which could include e.g., an introductory course on how to use AI tools or a course on AI and society.

In addition to teaching, the Professors of Practice will develop and facilitate a few co-curricular experiences each semester, such as workshops or events (e.g., "Data Week", Hack-a-Thon) for students, faculty, or community partners. The Professor of Practice will also have a role in helping direct and manage the focus and trajectory of CAIDS as active and key partners. Conducting research is not a requirement for the Professor of Practice position, but data-related research or scholarship on teaching and learning can take the place of some service work, especially for junior faculty who are trying to publish research stemming from their dissertation.
