Instructional Assistant- Agriculture/Land Lab

Position Serves Molalla High School/Land Lab

JOB GOAL: The goal of the Instructional Assistant - Agriculture/Land Lab is to assist licensed teachers in supervising and teaching students enrolled in the agriculture science program, grades 9-12. Classes are taught on a 50-acre land lab and include multiple classes in the areas of general agriculture, animal science and horticulture.

Curriculum includes:
  • Animal Production (nutrition, genetics, diseases, facilities, etc.) including beef cattle, sheep, swine, horses, poultry, rabbits, dogs, cats, and other small animals
  • Plant Production including greenhouse crop production, nursery production, landscape design and floral design
  • Science Principles with research projects
  • Agricultural mechanics and tractor operation
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must have the:

Ability to: communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English; organize and prioritize work to accomplish tasks timely and effectively; relate to students with a wide variety of academic and technical skills; operate power tools and drive tractors; pass driver training test to transport students in district vehicles (good driving record required); work in an environment with frequent interruptions and changing tasks and priorities; assist, console, and manage students who may be emotional, distraught, or frustrated; work collaboratively with staff, students, parents, volunteers and community members and remain calm, focused and in control when working in challenging situations with them; follow written and verbal directions; take initiative to seek clarity and/or take action when needed; maintain confidentiality of student information;

Skills to: use the equipment and materials specific to the position; use standard computer software including email, internet, and student information systems; complete basic farm maintenance and general repairs (i.e. plumbing, carpentry); effectively supervise others and manage interpersonal relationships; manage time and organize tasks;

Knowledge of: animal husbandry (feeding, disease detection and prevention, animal handling, etc.); supportive classroom management strategies and student discipline procedures;

Desired qualifications include three years' related experience in agriculture, business, or manufacturing; bilingual and bicultural skills; knowledge/training in a university teacher preparation program;

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.
  1. Work collaboratively by assisting teachers in assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors, and enhancing social growth of students in the classroom.
  2. Assist students in the use and application of specific vocational knowledge, skills, tools, processes, and equipment. May assist students and coordinate with business representatives in an in-school or off-site work environment as part of the vocational learning experience.
  3. Supervise student agriculture interns
  • Assist in training students in the use of tools and equipment as well as daily operational procedures
  • Oversee and assist students in the performance of projects and tasks
  1. Oversee management of day-to-day farm tasks
  • Feeding of livestock
  • Health checks of animals
  • Basic maintenance and repairs
  • Watering of plants
  1. Attend and assist students at FFA functions at instructor's request (evenings, weekends, and some summer support).
  2. Pick up teaching supplies from local vendors.
  3. Set up student learning stations.
  4. Communicate with students, parents, and community members with respect and confidentiality and consistent with the direction and guidance of staff, administrators, and school/district policies and procedures.
  5. Oversee student behavior and safety. Take steps to intervene when students are not in control, not in the proper location, or may be in dangerous or unsafe situations.
  6. Provide instructional support and tutoring to students in large groups, small groups, and one-on-one situations.
  7. Document behavior and progress of students to assist teacher in assessing progress with education plans. Maintain, or assist in maintaining, student weekly progress reports.
  8. Assist instructors, as needed, in meeting curriculum goals
  9. Attend required meetings and trainings
  10. Perform clerical duties such as making copies, operating office equipment, answering telephones, ordering materials, and record keeping.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:
  1. High School Diploma (Associates Degree or two years post-high school education, or the ability to successfully pass the written Instructional Assistant competency examination also required).
  2. Possess and maintain a valid First Aid/CPR card
  3. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
  4. Valid OR drivers' license
