Summary

The Wilmington VA Medical Center in Wilmington, DE is recruiting for a full-time Physician (General Surgery). Desirable candidates must be Board Certified or Board Eligible. Robotic surgery experience and fellowship experience preferred.



Duties
  • The incumbent should be able to diagnose and treat all of the common general surgical conditions, including but not limited to malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small and large intestine), gallbladder, endocrine system, skin and soft tissue.
  • Responsibilities include performing general surgical operations, outpatient ambulatory surgical procedures, outpatient, and inpatient general surgery consultations.
  • The general surgeon is expected to follow each patient through the full continuum of care to include admissions, discharges, performing histories and physicals, assisting in the coordination of diagnostic tests and procedures prior to surgery, education and counseling of the patient and family members.
  • The General Surgeon assures the provision of high quality, safe and professional patient care both in and outside the operating room.
  • Clinical management and organization of General Surgery assessment and preparation of patients for surgery.
  • Initial evaluation and overall workup of general surgery patients.
  • Informs veterans to the risks as well as benefits of upcoming surgical procedures.
  • Enters timely notes electronically in a paperless medical record system.
  • Provision of appropriate post-operative care.
  • Participates in a call-schedule with other providers from the service.
  • May require travel to CBOC facilities in Southern Delaware / Southern New Jersey to provide care to Veterans in those areas.
  • Participation in peer review and quality improvement activities.
  • Committee membership.
  • Understands and abides by the Medical Bylaws of this facility.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory

CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)

Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30am to 4:00pm; evenings, weekends, and holiday call schedule shared with other providers
