Subject matter expert in the maintenance of institution vehicles and therefore, works with a great deal of independence.

Must be a journeyman level mechanic and have the ability to establish priorities for preventive maintenance schedules for the vehicles.

Must ensure that all necessary repairs are made to ensure that the vehicles are safe for transport of staff and inmates.

Special skills are needed to complete work through the use of inmate workers.

Must be able to counsel and work with convicted felons in order to challenge them to complete work, while keeping in mind the personal security and safety risks.

Responsible for hazardous material handling, meeting OSHA requirements, environmental issues and adhering to safety procedures (e.g. Forklift Operation, Lockout/Tag-out, etc.). Ensures inmates comply with Institution and OSHA Safety Regulations through example and lectures. Responsible for the ordering and purchasing of all material/equipment needed to perform assigned projects.

Knowledgeable in the Facilities department database Computerized Maintenance and Management Software (CMMS) and be able to input and retrieve pertinent maintenance data.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution.

The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.
