Under the manager's direction, the incumbent may function as a Lead Inpatient Coder or perform highly complex coding in areas requiring specialized expertise. As a lead, the incumbent is responsible for daily oversight of the work assignments to ensure optimal workflow and productivity. Responsible for assessing the quality of abstracted data. Acts as a technical and informational resource for the Health Information Coder III level. Provides information on coding question trends, and issues that affect the coder-physician communication process and follow up on queries to physicians to address coding deficiencies. Reconciles discrepancies between coded physician encounter forms and HIM coding and works on denials.

Salary Range: $56.95-$70.81/hourly

Qualifications

Required:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-based
    (CCS-P)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • Certified Professional Coder – Hospital (CPC-H)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of acute multi-specialty
    hospital coding experience
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 CM and CPT coding
  • Knows anatomy, physiology, disease process, and
    medical terminology
  • Able to lead other staff and effectively function as
    a technical resource
  • Additional specialty certification a plus
  • 2+ years of pro-fee coding and facility coding
    experience
  • Experience as a Medical Record Abstractor
  • Detailed knowledge of Medical Terminology and its application
  • Detailed
    knowledge and understanding of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
  • Computer proficiency with MS Office
  • Superior ability to research coding guidelines and payor policies
    a must
  • Previous Epic experience

Preferred:
  • 3+ years of medical coding experience
  • Working experience with Nuclear Medicine guidelines
  • Knowledge of CMS and local carrier regulations
    and guidelines for teaching hospitals
