The Center of Excellence (CoE) in Data Science and Bioinformatics within LabCorp's Information Technology department leverages cutting-edge disciplines like artificial intelligence, machine learning, graph databases, statistics, bioinformatics, and natural language processing to address clinical, operational, and financial challenges. Our goal is to enhance the value of our offerings to customers by integrating data science and bioinformatics across LabCorp's diagnostics and drug development units. The CoE also serves as a collaborative platform, fostering teamwork and continuous learning within the LabCorp IT organization. We focus on advancing the understanding of biological measurements and assay performance, designing and developing algorithms to extract critical insights from clinical specimens.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Collects, manages, and studies biological data especially genomic and at the molecular level by using computer software and hardware with data mining and knowledge engineering as appropriate to the purpose
  • Collaborates with R&D scientists on the development of new assays, measurement technologies and tests for evaluating clinical conditions.
  • Performs statistical and bioinformatics analyses of experimental data produced by clinical testing instruments such as DNA sequencers, qPCR and other molecular instruments
  • Conducts data mining over internally produced and publicly available data sets
  • Provides analysis information to management to aid in decision making on the development of new laboratory developed tests
  • Provides bioinformatics support for the commercial molecular diagnostics
  • Develops or improves data analysis pipelines necessary for processing of large datasets

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven track record of proficiency in data analysis and statistical learning
  • Proficient in biological sequence analysis and analysis of next-generation sequencing data
  • Proficiency with R/S-PLUS, R, Matlab, or SAS highly desirable
  • Experience with Laboratory Developed Tests (LDT) highly desirable
  • Programming experience in Java, Python or Perl and experience with rational and non-structure databases is highly desirable
  • Experiences with public domain tools of NGS data analysis (CLCbio, GATK2, Bowtie, BWA, SOAP, Casava, Samtools, Bedtools).
  • Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought
  • Knowledge of using professional concepts to contribute to development of company's concepts and principles and to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways; works on extremely complex problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangible variables; exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results; acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree required, PhD preferred in Computational Biology/Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Molecular Biology, Physics, Engineering or related field
  • Must be able to provide evidence of relevant research expertise in the form of presentations, software, technical publications, and/or knowledge of applications.
  • PhD with 0-2 years' experience or Master with at least 2 years' experience in a biotechnology setting.
