Middle School Choir Director

St. Andrew's Episcopal School is seeking an experienced, energetic, and dynamic individual with a passion for teaching choral music and musical theater to students in grades 6-8. The candidate should understand and be able to model proper vocal technique, be familiar with suitable, age appropriate, inclusive choral repertoire, and should demonstrate a medium-high level of piano proficiency. The successful candidate will thrive in collaborative situations, as classes are co-taught with the Middle School Theater Director. This is a full-time position beginning August 1, 2024. Beyond relevant credentials and experience, successful candidates should love working with middle school age students, demonstrate a creative and engaging instructional style, and value the development of the whole student. All teachers at St. Andrew's are responsible for advancing the School's mission and its commitment to fostering an inclusive and richly diverse community environment. In addition to teaching duties, faculty members are broadly involved with school life. Each faculty member also serves as an advisor to several students and attends one overnight school trip per year.
Primary job responsibilities include:
- Co-Teacher of the 6th Grade Choir & Theater class, 6th grade Exploratory Singing class, and 7th/8th Grade Choir & Theater class.
- Choose a variety of choral repertoire for the Winter concert, St. Andrew's Day, Lessons & Carols
- Collaborate with MS Theatre Director to choose and cast both the 6th grade musical (junior) and 7th/8th grade musical (full show)
- Teach both choral and musical theater techniques, including but not limited to: blend, balance, phrasing, style, good tone production and quality, proper breathing and appropriate vowel formation.
- Should demonstrate proficient choral conducting skills and ability to play voice parts on piano; accompaniment skills are a bonus.
- Will connect with students and provide an enjoyable classroom experience while teaching with enthusiasm, creativity, and sensitivity to students' learning styles.
- Rehearse, record, and submit auditions to TPSMEA (Texas Private School Musical Educators Association) for MS Honor Choir, coordinate travel logistics and accompany selected students to the honor choir.
- Attend musical rehearsals and serve as the rehearsal pianist or play tracks during rehearsal. The ideal candidate will have:
- At least 2 years of classroom teaching experience
- Four year undergraduate degree or equivalent required; post graduate degree a plus.
- Ability to scaffold material for classes with students of varying experience.
- Strong collaborative skills through empathetic and positive communication.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills with the ability to work with a diverse group of constituents.
