Position Summary


Position: Staff to Senior Biologists


Bancroft Construction Services is hiring qualified field biologists for full-time, and on-call positions for ongoing contracts. We are seeking candidates with at least two years of field experience, including at least one year of nesting bird survey experience and compliance construction monitoring. Waters monitoring and wetland delineation experience is a definite plus. Preferred candidates are currently living in Central to Southern California or have California listed-species experience.

Much of this work is performed solo, so you must be comfortable with conducting surveys and hiking by yourself for sometimes lengthy distances, using a company truck off-road, monitoring construction, and vegetation clearing crews on your own, traveling throughout the Southern California Edison territory, sometimes in remote locations where overnight stays are required Monday – Friday. Occasional weekend work may be available, if interested. Scheduling can be made flexible available for week-by-week commitments.

We will provide training opportunities for those who wish to gain experience surveying various listed species.


Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in providing environmental regulatory compliance for clients at a variety of work locations through surveys, pre/post sweeps, identifying various plant and animal species, establish buffers for protected species or resources, compliance monitoring for work crews, and written species or work logs and reports of compliance activities on FRED, FieldMaps, & Survey123.

Serve as a liaison between project management and construction contractor to facilitate compliance with environmental mitigation measures and permit conditions.

Convey environmental guidelines to on-site staff, enforce protocols, and report any noncompliance.

Navigate maps and kmz’s in areas with little or no cellular service.

Travel long distances between projects and required to stay near project vicinity for a week at a time. (Per Diem is provided for all required overnight travel. Operate a vehicle in remote and off-road conditions alongside heavy machinery or utilities, possibly in hot or cold temperatures.

Maintain vehicle while keeping records of maintenance and receipts.

Work schedule may include 10-12 hour workdays depending on project needs.


Requirements and Qualifications

Minimum B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or another related field with at least one year of experience in the field completing species surveys and/or at least one year of construction monitoring. Candidates with the equivalent in knowledge and experience may also be considered.

Preference will be given to those who have experience with one or more of these species: California Gnatcatcher, Least Bell’s Vireo, Southwestern Willow Flycatcher, California Red-Legged Frog, California Yellow-Legged Frog, Desert Tortoise, Listed small mammals, Rare plant or botany experience and other listed species.

Familiarity with federal and state regulations governing management of natural resources of California.

General knowledge and experience conducting nesting bird surveys, general wildlife pre-construction surveys, and identifying plants and wildlife of California.

Comfortable working in physically challenging outdoor situations and conditions with the expectation of traveling regularly to project sites, which sometimes require overnight stays.

Detail-oriented, resourceful, with strong time management skills.

Ability to interact positively and professionally with clients, project manager, field supervisor, and other co-workers or crews.

Candidate must hold a valid driver’s license with no major traffic violations.

Flexibility to work early morning hours and occasional nights and weekends, as needed.


Compensation: $30-$45/hour.

Pay is project-specific and commensurate with skills and experience.
