Job Summary

Plans, organizes, and directs the inpatient and outpatient Pharmacies. Develops and implements new programs and policies aligned with the Hospital Strategic Plan. Provides care to patients of varying ages with age related needs.


Principal Duties/Responsibilities

Oversees the inpatient and outpatient staff in continuing maintenance of proper inventory levels and ordering procedures. Prepares bids and analyzes competitive pricing for pharmaceutical and capital equipment, projects per hospital policy and procedures. Oversees annual or bi-annual pharmacy inventories. Maintains records to accurately track inventory movement and analyzes the data on an ongoing basis.


Oversees the updates of inpatient and outpatient computer databases including drug interactions, allergy codes, price updates and all other data maintained by both systems. Directs all major software updates on the Inpatient Computer System, Outpatient Computer Systems and all freestanding personal computer in the department. Provides technical assistance and problem solving on all departmental computer systems. Provides software and systems analysis on all future departmental computer purchases.


Oversees the scheduling between outpatient and inpatient pharmacy staffs. Arranges the scheduling of relief personnel to accomplish purchasing, inventory, computer and accounting functions necessary for the department. Maintains adequate tracking of departmental FTE's as related to department budget. Keeps productivity data on analysis that indicates pharmacy staffing required by national productivity standards. Assigns and provides rotating coverage for supervisory staff on call schedule.


Oversees the end of the month department billing from the outpatient pharmacies. Audits and solves problems with electronic billing of Medicaid and CIDC. Develops new patient or third party accounting or billing systems as required. Performs monthly variance analysis for all pharmacies and provides explanation or detail of variances.


Develops audits of operational areas to monitor departmental compliance with policy and procedures and timeliness of delivery systems for inpatients and outpatients.


Directs the development of the educational needs of the department in conjunction with the Associate Director Clinical Services and Pharmacy Supervisors.


Directs department in compliance with established policies and procedures of University Medical Center, regulations of applicable regulatory agencies and standards of JCAHO.


Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings to communicate issues regarding compliance with established procedures and overall work unit effectiveness

Responsible for the recruitment and retention of qualified staff members.

Responsible to appropriately orient, develop and train staff members.


Insures that employee performance evaluations are conducted in a timely manner, which the performance evaluations are fair and consistent and that performance expectations are communicated.


Responsible for appropriate conduct management of staff members. Performs conflict-resolution, presents employee commendations, conducts problem solving and implement progressive disciplinary actions appropriate to University Medical Center policies and procedures.


Develops, implements and controls the department budget. Responsible for adherence to department budget management. Provide justifications for budget variances.

Provides leadership in problem identification and resolution and coordinate resolutions between departments as needed.


Promotes and establishes an atmosphere of Total Quality Improvement throughout the department with motivation, coaching and staff development and through evaluation, development and/or revision of department policies and procedures.


Adheres to Hospital and Department Body Substance Isolation and Hazard materials policies/procedures and utilizes/wears required protective equipment and clothing.


Performs all leadership responsibilities, to include but not limited to budget, costs, projects, performance evaluations, problem solving, total quality management, policies and procedures, etc.


Job Requirements:


  • Seven years in a management/supervision position with extensive experience in pertaining field.
  • Current Texas Pharmacy License.
  • Graduate from an accredited College of Pharmacy, PharmD preferred.
  • Certificates of completion of 12 hours approved continuing education per year.

  • Competency in computer software and hardware utilization.
  • Understanding of basic accounting concepts and principles.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in pharmacy operations, policies and procedures.
