Architectural Historian – Southern California


ASM Affiliates (ASM) has an immediate opening for a full-time Architectural Historian based in Southern California, out of either our Pasadena or Carlsbad offices; the position is a hybrid of remote work and on-site work (minimum 40% - 2 days in office). We are seeking a full-time candidate. ASM is a 100% employee-owned company with more than 45 years of experience as a cultural resource management (CRM) consulting firm. With more than 100 full-time staff members and 15 offices throughout the western and Pacific U.S., we are one of the most capable CRM firms in the country, specializing in architectural history, history, archaeology, and environmental regulatory compliance services for federal, state, and local agencies, as well as private proponents.

As a Senior Architectural Historian, you will be expected to perform efficiently in a team environment as well as working independently in a fast-paced environment. You will also be expected to work with minimal supervision under the direction of the Director of Architectural History. Project work may include the following: documentation and recordation of historic properties; architectural surveys; historic context development, CRHR and NRHP evaluations; and impacts/effects determinations in compliance with CEQA and Section 106 of the NHPA, as well as local regulations. The position will support all of our offices with potential travel opportunities throughout the west coast including Hawai’i. A positive attitude will best enable the historian to succeed in ASM’s collaborative work environment and develop mutually beneficial relationships with clients, subconsultants, co-workers, and management.

Qualifications


  • MA in Historic Preservation or Architectural History
  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards in Architectural History
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience, seven (7) or more preferred
  • Prior work experience in California preferred
  • Experience applying the NRHP criteria required, CRHR criteria preferred
  • Experience preparing CA DPR forms and applying CEQA preferred
  • Experience assessing effects/impacts in compliance with NHPA required; CEQA preferred
  • Experience evaluating linear resources (water, roads, transmission lines) preferred
  • Ability to describe architectural resources utilizing terminology appropriate to this discipline
  • Demonstrated archival research and writing skills
  • Familiarity with the NRHP bulletin series
  • Experience evaluating resources in other west coasts states is a plus, but not required
  • Perform efficiently in a team environment
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills
  • Reliable personal vehicle is required
  • Some travel is required, with occasional overnight trips
