Job Overview:

The National Death Index (NDI) is a centralized database of death record information maintained by the NCHS. It is a critical resource for researchers seeking to obtain mortality data for epidemiological and public health studies. By providing access to accurate and comprehensive mortality data, the NDI supports a wide range of research initiatives to understand and improve public health.


TAG is seeking a skilled Database Programmer I to support the National Death Index (NDI) program within the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), a vital component of the CDC. This role is responsible for designing, developing, and managing database systems to ensure accurate, efficient, and secure access to NDI data by conducting searches and providing timely mortality data to third-party research facilities on behalf of the CDC. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in database management, technical assistance, and compliance with IT policies.


Responsibilities:

  • Lead the utilization of advanced tools (SQL, ER/Studio, etc.) to segment and manage search data, ensuring optimal dataset handling.
  • Oversee comprehensive searches against the NDI database, guaranteeing thoroughness and precision of results.
  • Manage the prompt consolidation and delivery of search results to clients, including the provision of timely alerts.
  • Offer technical support to clients, including the interpretation of complex NDI match results, and document issues for NDI Director intervention.
  • Develop and deliver detailed monthly reports, perform meticulous documentation reviews, and implement proactive error correction measures.
  • Enhance business processes and internal controls through robust qualitative and quantitative data analytics.
  • Mentor junior programmers and provide guidance on best practices in data management and technical support.
  • Inform stakeholders of all modifications and projected risks that is required by the NDI change control board
  • Keep all purchase order search requests separate and provide to the NDI Director for invoicing
  • Review all transmittal forms and fee worksheets for accuracy and completeness
  • Leading all customer service efforts for the team
  • Escalate issues, problems, and concerns to the NDI Director


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in SQL, SharePoint, and database management systems.
  • Extensive experience with data management tools and database search techniques.
  • Proven track record in data analytics and process improvement.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and completeness.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.
  • Proficiency in documentation practices and error correction methods.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.


Preferred Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) operations.
  • Experience in enhancing operational support for large-scale data management programs.
  • Familiarity with grants management and financial operations in a government or health-related context.
  • Experience with SAMS and secure access management systems.
  • Prior experience working in a public health or government setting.
  • Knowledge of NDI policies and procedures.
  • Experience in call center or helpdesk support, providing technical assistance and resolving client queries efficiently.
