At Terraform Industries we believe in a future where energy is universally cheap, clean, and abundant. We’re developing the Terraformer which is a scalable machine to make cheap synthetic carbon neutral natural gas. A Terraformer will mine the sky, to quench the flow of carbon from the crust into the atmosphere. Instead of extracting carbon from deep underground, Terraform’s technology enables humans anywhere to create cost effective industrial-scale quantities of hydrocarbons directly from solar energy and air.
Your mission will be to design and deliver low-cost, minimal complexity, robust mechanical systems to synthesize fuel from water, sunlight, and air.
You will be the Senior Mechanical Engineer within the technical team reporting to the Direct Air Capture Lead.
- Understand cost and complexity impacts on design decisions for the overall system
- Design and build, mechanical, fluid, and thermal systems
- Thermal, structural, and tolerance analysis for electrical, mechanical, and fluid systems using hand calculations and experimental validation
- Mechanical design, 3D modeling, and creation of production drawings
- Own hardware delivery timeline and success through inception to integration
- Lead and participate in internal design reviews
- Source required components for prototype designs
- Participate in recruitment efforts for their team, and actively contribute to team career development
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering (or equivalent)
- 5+ years of professional experience in mechanical design, analysis and building prototypes
- Demonstrated history of effectively managing design projects from conception to implementation, including working with cross-functional teams, creating working physical prototypes/proof of concept and managing vendor relationships
- Experience using CAD software, with a recent, strong background designing mechanical components and generating technical drawings
- Comfort with turning ambiguous problem sets into solved problems, resulting in working hardware designs
- Demonstrated ability to intuitively or analytically arrive at self-evidently correct designs while exercising good judgment with regards to ‘value engineering’ as well as time management
- A strong understanding of the difference between good engineering and perfect engineering, with the knowledge of when to deploy each of them
- Firm understanding of GD&T per ANSI Y14.5
- Comfort troubleshooting electromechanical systems
- Experience sizing balance of plant components such heat exchangers, condensers, dryers, compressors, piping, and valves for low and high pressure/temperature applications
- Knowledge of standard installation and fabrication methods of fluid systems (tube stock, fittings, connections, fasteners, welding, etc.)
- Familiar with high-volume manufacturing processes and experienced in sourcing and procuring parts on a large scale, ideally on more than one class of factory
- Knowledge of international engineering standards and experience in validating and qualifying designs for demanding outdoor environments
- Ability to work in fast-paced, demanding iterative design and manufacturing environments
Location - Terraform Industries is based in the castle building in Burbank, near Los Angeles, California. All work is performed on-site in Burbank.
