General Job Description


We are seeking dedicated and experienced Construction Technician ( CEI Inspector / Tester ) to join our team in Livonia, MI, and Lansing, MI. This role focuses on providing construction inspection, contractor oversight, troubleshooting field issues, coordinating inspection staff, and documenting construction activities according to contract requirements. Ideal candidates will have a flexible schedule, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently and in a team, often in outdoor environments. Your Primary Focus

  • Conduct daily field inspections of construction work and prepare comprehensive daily work reports.
  • Interpret construction drawings and specifications to ensure project compliance.
  • Assess field conditions to determine if changes to the construction contract are necessary.
  • Implement RFIs on submittals and shop drawings into real-world construction projects.
  • Perform or oversee a variety of materials testing, including concrete, aggregates, and density testing in both field and lab settings per MDOT standards and specifications. 
  • Track and record as-built information for incorporation into project record drawings.
  • Communicate effectively with the project team throughout the construction process.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills to manage project documentation and communication.
  • Conduct field inspections to verify contract requirements on construction of roadways and bridges.
  • Prepare and review Inspector's Daily Reports in AASHTOWare, FieldManager/FieldBook.
  • Organize and maintain construction documentation in FieldManager, ProjectWise.
  • Act as the on-site liaison with clients and the community.
  • Interact and communicate effectively with on-site construction contractors.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of project plans and specifications.
  • Assist Project Managers with contract requirements and project coordination.
  • Prepare forms and other necessary paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Attend seminars and training courses to stay current with industry standards.
  • Maintain excellent client relations and ensure a safe working environment.


What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience in MDOT or MDOT Local Agency Program inspection / testing utilizing AASHTOWare, FieldManager/FieldBook.
  • High school diploma required; associate degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Direct experience in testing or inspection roles on MDOT or local agency program projects is preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word and Excel) required.
  • Experience with Bluebeam, Adobe, AASHTOWare, FieldBook, FieldManager, and ProjectWise preferred.
  • Certifications such as Certified Erosion, Sediment, and Storm Water Inspector (CESSWI) and Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) are a plus (preferred).
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment substance abuse test and background check.
  • Experience in HMA, Soils and concrete, with a thorough understanding of MDOT construction material acceptance requirements.
  • Certifications in SESC/Storm Water Operator, Concrete, and Density testing preferred.
  • Strong capability to work as a team member with multiple disciplines.
  • Self-motivated with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proven ability to organize and maintain construction documentation.
