YinzCam is a Carnegie Mellon University spin-off with its roots in distributed-systems research. Our digital products are used by tens of millions of sports fans, around the world, including fans of the NFL, NBA, MLS, NHL, English Premier League, LigaMX, AFL (Australia), and more.
AREAS OF FOCUS
As a Research Scientist at YinzCam, you will have a lead research role with a focus on either distributed systems or mixed-reality projects, or both. You will likely engage on one (or more) of these three research projects, and can propose additional new projects that you might have in mind.
- Edge computing and strategic distributed offloading for mixed-reality applications.
- Fault-tolerance and failure-diagnosis for edge-computing applications.
- Multi-sensor biomechanical testbeds for evaluating and improving esports players.
THE ROLE
This is an industrial R&D position, with the ability to conduct foundational research, gather real-world data, and also see ideas through to production in the hands of millions of users. The ability to author top-tier research publications is a must.
As a Research Scientist at YinzCam, you will be working on researching, developing, implementing, analyzing new algorithms and new systems techniques in massive cloud-hosted production environments. You will be building experimental testbeds and conducting user studies. You will be working with undergraduate and Master's students on research projects and co-authoring research publications with other researchers.
The ideal candidate has a track-record of demonstrated independent research and innovation, has a track-record of publishing their ideas to well-known IEEE/ACM/USENIX systems conferences, has a track-record of real-world impact with applied research, has great verbal and written communication skills, and has a passion for seeing things deployed to production, and in the hands of real users.
THE REQUIREMENTS
Research experience with a track record of well-known first-author publications in IEEE/ACM/USENIX conferences on distributed systems or mobile computing,
- Deep understanding of distributed-systems concepts, such as logical clocks, asynchrony, concurrency, consensus, quorums, replication, consistency, databases, transaction processing, etc.
- Deep understanding of low-level operating-systems and hardware concepts, such as timers, interrupts, memory management, bus architectures, schedulers, device drivers etc.
- Deep understanding of networking protocols, both wired and wireless, including Ethernet, TCP, UDP, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LoRa, Zigbee, I2C, etc.
- Deep understanding of mixed-reality, augmented-reality, virtual-reality, graphics, etc.
- An implementor at heart, with the ability to tinker, build systems, tear them apart, understand them, and get the most out of them.
- PhD in Computer Science OR Computer Engineering.
