Laboratory Research Technician III RBL

The incumbent will work as part of a two-investigator team conducting research on tuberculosis and TB/HIV coinfection. Responsibilities will include performing molecular, immunologic, and microbiologic assays on blood and tissues specimens from animals experimentally infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and/or simian immunodeficiency virus. The incumbent will follow established protocols, troubleshoot protocols as necessary, and collect and analyze data. Much of the work will be conducted at either BioSafety Level-2 or at BioSafety Level-3 in the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory, requiring a DOJ background check. The incumbent will assist senior researchers in developing research proposals and papers and will maintain organized records. Experience with infectious disease research, immunology (e.g. FACS and ELISPOT), or molecular biology (e.g. PCR) techniques is a plus.
One Principal Investigator (PI) who directs these studies is in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics within the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The other is an physician-scientist in the Department of Infectious Diseases at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The incumbent will communicate regularly with the PIs by email, phone, and face-to-face meetings. This position may also involve interaction with other collaborating PI’s, direct supervisor, co-workers, and personnel in other laboratories.
This position requires immunologic and molecular biological skills and the ability to learn a variety of skills, including operation of laboratory equipment and mastery of Biosafety Level 3 techniques. Bachelor level degree with preference given to those with degrees in biology, immunology, or molecular biology. At least 2 years' experience in an immunology, microbiology, or related laboratory. Work in a research lab as an undergraduate may suffice. A formal training program is conducted by supervisor or co-workers until employee can perform effectively with problem solving and minimum daily supervision. Additional training by the University’s Environmental Health and Safety is required.
A pre-employment TB test is utilized to pre-emptively prevent the spread of tuberculosis to medical and healthcare professionals as well as patients.
Job Summary
Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.
Essential FunctionsWe use non-human primates as a model to study tuberculosis. The incumbent will perform laboratory analyses including isolation of immune cells from blood and tissues, immunologic assays such as FACS, ELISPOT, and ELISA, plating bacterial cultures, and performing PCR tests. Equipment used will include microscopes, centrifuges, incubators, ELISPOT reader, and real-time PCR machines. The work will be done in a team environment with close coordination between all team members. The data generated will be entered into an electronic laboratory notebook and shared with the Principal Investigators and other collaborators (both intra- and extramural) who will rely on it to make important scientific decisions. Experienced laboratory technicians will train and directly supervise the incumbent.The studies and the data generated, while not confidential, are certainly sensitive and privileged information.
Physical EffortMust be able to work in a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory, including the ability to wear the requisite personal protective equipment. Must be able to use a computer keyboard and mouse, to see and hear clearly to maintain a safe working environment, and to critically analyze and synthesize information. This position may involve extended periods of time in the BSL3 lab space doing lab work. There are no extended periods of walking or standing required, nor is there any heavy lifting required.
