Forward-thinking candidates who demonstrate and apply their experience leading collaborative design of next-generation hospitality and mixed-use developments will immediately influence our work, in creating solutions at a range of scales across the US and internationally. This position provides the opportunity for growth and career advancement.

Position Responsibilities:

Lead and contribute senior expertise to landscape architecture projects for a wide variety of clients as part of interdisciplinary teams of architecture, landscape architecture, and planning at Hart Howerton. Maintain the Hart Howerton approach of “designing complete environments,” while responding to market, environmental, and client objectives. Reinforce through design and project leadership Hart Howerton’s established reputation as “big thinkers who can create a vision for the whole” and provide technical expertise in the execution of designs at an equally high level.

Design/Technical/Documentation Leadership:

  • Strong creative designer: ability to think conceptually, focusing on the technical solutions that make concepts buildable.
  • Proven ability to make presentations and facilitate discussions.
  • Produce successful, profitable projects, and lead teams required to execute exemplary projects, including:
  • Oversee relationships with project consultants for assigned projects in the design phase.
  • Assist in preparing fee and workload projections for assigned projects.
  • Document projects and research for reference files.
  • Supervise the production and/or produce documents that convey and interpret design intent.
  • Provide quality control on all projects.
  • Conduct project technical and design reviews when appropriate.
  • Proficiency in all the basic technical skills of landscape architecture including grading, stormwater management strategies, site planning, planting plans, construction documentation, irrigation coordination, graphics, computer skill, etc.

Client Relations:

  • Think like your clients: focus on their goals and objectives.
  • Evidence of strong working relationships with clients and team members, including consultants and contractors.
  • Establish client confidence early in the project through careful listening, interactive dialog, demonstration of expertise, and experience. Ensure that relations with clients throughout any project are well-managed, proactive, responsive, and enjoyable. Continue to reinforce clients’ perception of HH as “people who work hard and are also fun to be with”.
  • Engage clients in explorations that respectfully challenge their understanding of appropriate design solutions.
  • Communicate design solutions in a clear and compelling way.

Staff Relations:

  • Ensure that all staff have a high level of satisfaction with their role in teams you lead.
  • Act as a mentor, coaching and motivating design teams and ambitious individuals while encouraging their curiosity and sharing knowledge of the technical aspects of HH project types.
  • Prepare and present employee performance evaluations where appropriate.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and supervise the work of others in order to meet deadlines and provide high quality service to clients.
  • Ability to work effectively with a range of personalities with diplomacy and efficiency.
  • Strong management and communication skills.

Experience Required:

12+ years minimum experience required, 15+ preferred with a landscape architectural firm or division within a firm offering a range of design services that Hart Howerton respects, with at least 2+ years in a leadership/management role. Experienced and knowledgeable in types of work HH pursues; Experience with all stages of work, from concept through construction documents and construction administration; Ability to maintain an appropriate average billable percentage.

Educational Requirements:
