Research Associate, Analytical
one.bio is a fast-paced, biotechnology spinout from UC Davis creating ingredients for food and biopharmaceutical applications. We use proprietary technology to create novel oligosaccharides from natural products, with a focus on producing ingredients that beneficially modulate the microbiome and immune function.
Overview:
We are seeking a motivated Analytical Research Associate to join our rapidly growing company. This position will report to the Head of Analytics and will be responsible for operationalizing and employing a variety of techniques for the structural characterization of poly- and oligosaccharides. This person will also be responsible for implementing glycomic and metabolomic assays. Other responsibilities may include data analysis and general troubleshooting.
The candidate will be required to work both independently, but also with internal and external collaborators. Previous experience with carbohydrates is desired; however, successful candidates can have experience working with proteins or other biomolecules. The analytical team serves as the link between the different arms of our discovery and production pipeline. Experience in high throughput glycomics, proteomics, or metabolomics is recommended. A highly exceptional candidate would have experience in both structurally characterizing complex carbohydrates and implementing metabolomic profiling using a variety of mass spectrometry platforms.
Summary of Key Responsibilities:
· Coordinate and perform chemical analysis of carbohydrate and bacterial growth metabolites according to standard protocols.
· Interpret and evaluate analytical results.
· Determine reasons for problems and recommend corrective actions.
· Research and test new lab techniques and procedures and recommend changes in operating processes.
· Diagnose, troubleshoot, and coordinate maintenance and repair of a variety of mass spectrometers and other instrumentation.
· Maintain inventory and order supplies; research and recommend new equipment as required.
· Authoring technical reports, SOPs, and maintaining clear and concise laboratory notebooks.
· Conducting literature reviews on topics of interest.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or biochemistry and at least 1 year of laboratory experience is preferred.
· Experience working with biological molecules (lipids, proteins, metabolites), carbohydrates, glycoproteins, human milk oligosaccharides is preferred.
· Expertise in operation and maintenance in mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography techniques is preferred.
· Demonstrated experience in rapid and high-throughput analytical techniques and data analysis is preferred.
· Ability to follow SOPs and safety protocols while working in a clean and organized matter.
· Capable of efficiently communicating scientific results through verbal and oral platforms.
· A collaborative approach and strong critical thinking capabilities.
