About the Role

The role of Assistant Controller is to lead and manage the accounting function, being the right hand of the Chief Financial Officer.


Our client is seeking an experienced, skilled, and detail-oriented individual to join their corporate office based in Oakbrook, Illinois. As an Assistant Controller, you will be responsible for corporate accounting along with supporting/leading the plant Office Managers in maintaining accurate financial records, managing accounts payable and receivable, reconciling bank statements, and preparing financial reports. The role will be crucial in ensuring the smooth financial operations of our plants and centralizing payroll and tax matters.


Working Environment

While you create and implement accounting processes and systems, daily/weekly interaction with the CEO and CFO on a is critical as the company continues its growth trajectory. Because of the strategic nature of this role, it will be important to be in-office in Oakbrook Monday-Friday.


Specific Responsibilities

  • Payroll Processing: Process payroll for plant employees, ensuring compliance with tax regulations, wage laws, and company policies.
  • Tax Compliance: Assist in gathering and organizing financial data for tax purposes and collaborating with external accountants or tax advisors to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations. This includes sales taxes, employee related taxes, and other taxes. Experience & knowledge in taxes is a skillset that will set you apart from other candidates.
  • Financial Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, including recording daily transactions, expenses, invoices, receipts, and payments. You will be responsible for the corporate offices’ day-to-day accounting and will support and review the plants accounting.
  • Accounts Payable: Manage accounts payable processes, performing weekly payment selection for all plants ensuring timely payments to vendors. Process new vendor credit applications. Assist CFO in vendor terms negotiations. You will also be responsible for processing vendor bills for the corporate office.
  • Accounts Receivable: To ensure timely collections from our customers you will perform a weekly aged receivables analysis, draft intent to line letters and engage with legal counsel to file liens. You will also be responsible for analyzing new customer credit submissions. Finally, you will be providing customer credit submissions.
  • Bank Reconciliation: Perform regular bank statement reconciliations to verify the accuracy of recorded transactions and ensure that the company's financial records align with bank statements.
  • Monthly Closing: Lead the monthly financial close process and financial statement preparation. Ensure the monthly close is completed timely and accurately, including a review of all account reconciliations and key accruals. Assist CEO in preparation of internal business operating system review reports.
  • Documentation and Filing: Maintain organized and secure financial files and documents, ensuring compliance with record-keeping requirements. Asist in documentation gathering for external audit, form independent CPA firm and financial lenders.
  • Software Proficiency: Utilize accounting software Titan and tools to manage financial transactions, generate reports, and streamline accounting processes.
  • Acquisitions: Participate in the due diligence process of targeted acquisition opportunities. Assist in integration once acquired.
  • Other: Perform other related accounting/financial duties as requested by management.

The Person

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is preferred. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is essential. CPA and/or CMA is desired but not required.
  • Experience: Three to six years of relevant accounting experience with ideally one to two years of Senior Accounting Management experience. Experience with multiple locations and business segments consisting of revenue of at least $30 million of annual sales. Familiarity with the construction industry and specific accounting practices, such as job costing and project billing, is a plus.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn and adapt to changing accounting practices, industry regulations, company growth and evolving procedures.
  • Meticulous: Excellent diligence and accuracy in recording financial transactions and maintaining financial records.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Communication Skills: Effective written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with team members, vendors, and external stakeholders.
  • Technology Proficiency: Experience with accounting software is expected. Experience with Titan software would make the candidate stand out. Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to analyze financial data, identify discrepancies, and propose solutions.
  • Integrity and Confidentiality: High level of integrity and ability to manage sensitive financial information with confidentiality and discretion.
