Position: Fiber Optic Design Engineer

Location: Houston, TX 77039

Work Schedule: In-office 2 days a week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays)


Overview: We are seeking a qualified Fiber Optic Design Engineer with a strong background in network design and GIS to join our team in Houston. The ideal candidate will be responsible for translating network designs into GIS databases and ensuring the accuracy of fiber optic architecture.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Understand and interpret network design, as-builts, and permit packages to integrate them into GIS databases.
  • Comprehend fiber architecture and construction practices, including installation methods like boring.
  • Analyze and process data using Excel (including VLOOKUPS) to support design and reporting.
  • Navigate and utilize GIS systems, specifically ARCMAP, with a solid foundation in GIS principles.
  • Work with 3GIS, adapting to the client specific modifications of the platform.
  • Conduct site surveys and validations, traveling within the market (less than 20% of the time) to collect and verify data.
  • Ensure data consistency and accuracy by reviewing and validating information against as-built records.
  • Read KMZ files and perform signal tracing, identifying fiber damage and utilizing GIS tools for data analytics.
  • Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to review designs and approve necessary changes.


Qualifications:

  • Experience: 5-7 years in the telecommunications industry with at least 3 years of GIS experience.
  • Solid foundation in GIS, with proficiency in navigating various attributes within GIS systems.
  • Strong analytical skills, particularly in Excel (VLOOKUPS and data processing).
  • Familiarity with fiber optic design principles, specifically in relation to network infrastructure.
  • Experience with data validation and ensuring consistency with as-built information.
  • Project management skills to oversee project flows to completion.


Education: No formal degree is required; practical experience is valued.

Travel Requirements: Occasional field visits to collect and verify data, reimbursable mileage for travel.

Additional Information: The Design Engineer position is primarily desktop-based, focusing on network design for fiber optic cables, including small cells and in-building projects.

Training will be provided in-house.
