Animal Research Associate

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Execute Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Protocols for various procedures involving study and stock animals, encompassing clinical observations, food consumption tracking, body weight monitoring, urine collection, administration of injectable anesthesia, mating processes, blood draws via all routes, euthanasia/necropsy procedures, catheter placements, restraint techniques, enrichment protocols, and feeding schedules.
  • Generate study-specific forms and labels as directed.
  • Adhere to written and verbal directives, including SOPs, Protocols, and Daily Schedules.
  • Document, input, and review raw data pertaining to studies and facility operations.
  • Prepare for and support procedures involving study animals, including surgical assistance (e.g., sterile preparations, anesthesia equipment setup and monitoring, post-surgery care).
  • Operate various laboratory equipment, such as glucometers, Harvard pumps, digital thermometers, centrifuges, and incubators.
  • Monitor and promptly report changes in animal behavior or health, as well as any issues with animal housing conditions (e.g., cages, lighting, temperature) to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in work areas.
  • Report study-related changes to the Study Director and relevant personnel.
  • Possibly contribute to the review and refinement of SOPs related to animal care, technical procedures, and facility operations.
  • Administer or assist with veterinary treatments for research and colony animals as assigned.
  • Conduct assessments of abnormal animal behaviors and support the animal socialization program as required.
  • May undertake husbandry responsibilities.
  • May undergo cross-training in other departments.


What You’ll Need for Success:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree in a scientific field preferred.
  • 0-2 years of experience working with animals, preferably in research or a regulated environment.
  • Preference for ALAT certification.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Project, InfoPath, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint), with a capacity to quickly adapt to new software programs.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply instructions from various documents, including safety guidelines, operating manuals, and procedure documents, and to compose routine reports and correspondence.
  • Mathematical aptitude for interpreting scientific data and calculations.
  • Capability to collaborate across functions for process enhancements.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, multitasking abilities, and organizational skills in fast-paced, evolving settings.
  • Adeptness at managing change and readily adapting to new projects.
  • Positive demeanor towards work and colleagues, coupled with effective communication skills across all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency in problem identification and resolution.


Schedule/Team:

Research Associate – Small Animal (rodents)

  • Training time (5-6 months): Monday – Friday / 7am-3:30pm
  • After training: Tuesday – Saturday OR Sunday – Thursday / 7am-3:30pm

Research Associate – Large Animal (non-human primates & canines)

  • Training time (2-3 months): Monday – Friday / 8am-4pm
  • After training: Tuesday – Saturday OR Sunday – Thursday / 8am-4pm
