Job Posting: Mates (First Mate, Second Mate, Third Mate)


Position Overview:

We are seeking qualified candidates for the positions of First Mate, Second Mate, and Third Mate. These roles are integral to the vessel's operations, with responsibilities spanning navigation, cargo handling, safety procedures, and compliance with all regulations. Each Mate assists the Master and

supervises deck personnel as required.


Direct Supervisor:

  • Master (First Mate)
  • First Mate (Second Mate and Third Mate)


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Watch Officer Duties:
  • Maintain pilothouse watch at sea and at anchor
  • Keep a proper lookout at all times
  • Ensure safe mooring of the vessel while in port
  • Monitor vessel security and environmental discharges
  • Ensure safe and proper handling of cargo and ballast
  • Supervise Deck and Maintenance Departments in all deck operations


General Responsibilities:

  • Familiarize yourself with the company Safety Management System (SMS) Manual
  • Schedule and execute required onboard training and drills
  • Assist the Master and other Mates in administrative duties
  • Inspect and record deck Streamlined Inspection Program (SIP) ICRs
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies
  • Respond according to duties listed on the Station Bill


Additional Responsibilities for Specific Positions:

  • First Mate:
  • Oversee navigational watch and ensure compliance with all regulations
  • Manage and supervise deck operations and maintenance
  • Coordinate cargo handling and ensure proper stowage
  • Conduct safety drills and training sessions
  • Assist the Master with administrative duties and voyage planning
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards


Second Mate:

  • Support the First Mate in all aspects of vessel operations
  • Maintain navigational watch and ensure safe passage
  • Assist with deck operations and maintenance supervision
  • Support cargo handling and stowage activities
  • Participate in safety drills and training sessions
  • Assist with voyage planning and administrative tasks


Credential, License/Endorsement, and Certificate Requirements:

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard Medical Certificate (5 years / Pilot)
  • Valid U.S. DOT Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Minimum U.S. Coast Guard license as Mate (Great Lakes) with appropriate tonnage endorsement
  • U.S. Coast Guard endorsement for Great Lakes First Class Pilotage (except for tug/barge operations)
  • U.S. Coast Guard Radar Observer endorsement (or approved course certificate)
  • U.S. Coast Guard Lifeboatman / PSC endorsement (or approved course certificate)
  • FCC Radio Operator Permit (or equivalent)
  • Advanced Firefighting course certificate
  • ECDIS course certificate
  • First Aid / CPR / AED course certificate
  • Minimum 5-year company (or Union) physical noting "Fit for Duty" status


Additional Requirements for Specific Positions:

  • First Mate:
  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard license as First Mate
  • Extensive experience in maritime operations and vessel management
  • Great lake pilotage required
