Melton Truck Lines is a leading asset-based trucking company with operations throughout North America. In addition to our asset-based company, we operate a non-asset-based logistics company, providing comprehensive freight exchange and operational optimization solutions in the logistics and trucking industry.
Position Summary:
Melton is seeking a seasoned Corporate Counsel to join our legal team. This role is integral to the company, providing legal advice, risk management, and support across all aspects of our business, with a particular focus on contracts, compliance, and regulatory matters related to the trucking and logistics industry. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in litigation and/or corporate law, with experience in trucking and contracts being preferred but not necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal guidance and support to various departments within the company, including operations, sales, logistics, and human resources.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including service agreements, vendor contracts, employment agreements, and confidentiality agreements.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations affecting the trucking and logistics industry.
- Manage litigation and disputes, coordinating with external counsel as necessary.
- Advise on corporate governance, business strategy, and risk management.
- Keep abreast of legislation and regulatory changes that may affect the company and its operations.
- Provide training and guidance to company employees on legal and compliance matters.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
- A minimum of 10 years of legal experience, preferably with some experience in litigation and/or the trucking, logistics, or transportation industry.
- Strong knowledge of contract law and experience with a variety of contracts.
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- High level of integrity and professionalism, with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information discreetly.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the trucking, logistics, or transportation industry.
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance and risk management within the sector.
