Job Description:

In New York City, a Fire Safety Director is required by law to staff any building equipped with a Class-E fire alarm system with two-way voice communication at all times while the building is occupied, in order to manage the fire alarm control panel and to interface with first responders in the event of an emergency at the facility.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The deputy fire safety director shall have the following duties .and responsibilities and such other duties and responsibilities as prescribed by rule:

1. The deputy fire safety director shall be present in the building during regular business hours. When the fire safety director is absent during such hours, a deputy fire safety director shall be present in the building and shall perform the duties of the fire safety director.

2. In the event of a fire, the deputy fire safety director shall report to the fire command station or designated alternative location, and, if appropriate, implement the fire safety and evacuation plan in accordance with its terms and the provisions of the rules, and notify arriving emergency response personnel and incident commander of the fire and the building response thereto, and ensure the Fire Department has been notified of any fire or fire alarm

3. The deputy fire safety director designated shall be fully familiar with the provisions of the fire safety and evacuation plan and shall conduct staff training and drills as appropriate.

4. The deputy fire safety director shall be fully familiar with the provision of the fire safety and evacuation plan and, when a fire brigade is required, shall conduct fire brigade training drills.

In the event of a fire/fire alarm, the deputy fire safety director shall be primarily responsible to operate the fire command station during the initial fire alarm, and to supervise, provide for and coordinate the following:

• manning of the fire station

• direction of evacuation procedures as provided in the Fire Safety Plan

• report on conditions on fire floor for information of Fire Department on their arrival

• advise the Fire Department Chief-in-Charge in the operation of the Fire Command Station

Be responsible for fire safety training and activities, as necessary, including but not limited to the following:

• conducting daily lamp test of the Fire Command station

• conducting fire safety and environmental rounds

• monitoring stairwell doors for positive latching, and managing other related building life safety features

• conducting fire warden training

• performing respiratory fit testing for all staff on all tours

• conducting fire and emergency drills

• assisting in distribution of oxygen e-cylinders

• conducting departmental training and new employee orientation on fire safety

• ensuring appropriate fire warden staffing and monitor fire wardens log books

• participating with elevator recall testing

• coordinating with facilities vendors to ensure workplace safety

• Participate In various fire safety, life safety, emergency management, and environment of care management activities, committees, and tasks, as necessary


Minimum Qualifications:

1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting agency and four (4) years of general experience in safety and accident prevention work, one (1) year of which must have involved responsibility for the conduct of an organized safety and accident prevention program; or

2. A satisfactory equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience.

• Driver license valid in the State of New York (required}

• Certificates of Fitness issued by the Fire Department of New York:

• FLSD Fire & Life Safety Director or F-89fr -89 Fire Safety Director with EAP or equivalent, or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire (preferred)

• F-01/W-01 Fire Drill Conductor (preferred)

• S-95 Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems

(preferred)

• FEMA Incident Command IS-700, IS-100

(preferred)

EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:

• Bachelors Degree (preferred)

• High School Diploma or GED (required)
