Nikon SLM Solutions is a leading provider of metal based additive manufacturing technology, commonly referred to as 3D printers, utilizing selective laser melting powder bed fusion technology. Our 3D printers are designed to produce parts directly from a variety of metal powders. The customers for our metal based additive manufacturing systems come from various industries such as aerospace, energy, healthcare, and automotive. Headquartered in Lübeck Germany, SLM Solutions has approximately 600 employees worldwide.


POSITION DESCRIPTION:


The applications engineer is a key technical role for Nikon SLM Solutions, who guides customers on their additive manufacturing adoption journey pre-to-post machine sale. Working with both new to AM and seasoned AM technology adopters, the applications engineer will evaluate and consult on customer parts, develop business case analyses, consult on design for additive manufacturing, setup files and documentation for print jobs, print parts, and report results to the customer. Providing post-sales support of customers as they implement SLM Solutions Products is also a key function of the role:


  • Provide technical guidance across the additive manufacturing value chain to support the sale of SLM Solutions products.
  • Discuss the operation and best use practices of SLM Solutions products with customers.
  • Provide specialized consultation to customers in the use of SLM Solutions technology for across many market segments.
  • Develop strong relationships with customer contacts to enable effective engagement and execution.
  • Execute projects for customers from project scoping, proposal, printing, post processing, testing, and reporting.
  • Conduct advanced training programs at customer sites and at the demonstration center.
  • Operate SLM equipment including file preparation, machine setup, powder handling and part unloading.


CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:


Required Education and Experience:


  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree in an Engineering Discipline.
  • Experience with SLM Solutions metal printers.
  • Three years post bachelors experience in laser powder bed fusion metal additive manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of metal alloys commonly applied in the tooling, aerospace, energy, and automotive industries.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience presenting to customers.
  • Desire to train others in the use of additive manufacturing and demonstrate a passion for how additive manufacturing is successfully implemented.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage several ongoing processes and projects.
  • Proven experience with part and data preparation software, such as Materialise Magics, Autodesk Netfabb, or equivalent software.
  • Exposure to root cause analysis and other problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to follow written instructions and maintain written and electronic records.
  • Domestic and international travel up to 25%.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Hiring process includes background and reference checks which must have satisfactory results.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States. The company will not sponsor applicants for work visas.


Other Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience implementing conventionally manufactured metal components in an aerospace/space setting.
  • Experience implementing metal laser powder bed fusion in a manufacturing setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and execute test plans to evaluate material performance.
  • Strong experience leading or managing projects of various size, duration, and scope
  • Strong analytical skills.
