Quantum Research Engineer

The primary role of a Quantum Hardware Design Engineer is to research, design, develop, and assist in testing quantum devices and related hardware. This position requires bridging the gap between solid-state components—such as quantum dots, superconducting circuits, and topological qubits—and the quantum architecture and other hardware and software layers of a quantum computer.
Responsibilities:
- Research and articulate key aspects of qubit and component technologies.
- Propose, design, and simulate novel approaches to qubits and qubit gates.
- Collaborate with modeling, fabrication, measurement, hardware, and systems teams to advance key aspects of quantum computer subsystems and products.
- Stay updated on relevant technology trends both within and outside the company.
- Serve as a bridge between the team and hardware development and architecture teams to accelerate the product roadmap towards a functional quantum computer.
- Evaluate factors such as reporting formats, cost and schedule constraints, and the need for security restrictions to determine the product roadmap.
Skills:
- Creativity, strong verbal and written communication skills, and analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Team player and detail-oriented; able to work in a fast-paced environment with geographically dispersed team members.
- Deep knowledge of solid-state (semiconductor and/or superconducting) device physics relevant to quantum computer development.
- Profound understanding of solid-state quantum computer control approaches and architectures at the quantum plane.
- Ability to link scientific progress and milestones to product timelines and acceleration.
- Basic knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
- Previous experience with computer applications and design software related to the engineering field.
Education and Experience:
- PhD degree in Physics or Engineering required.
- 8-10 years of experience, including graduate school education.
Top 3 Skills Required:
- Deep knowledge of solid-state (semiconductor and/or superconducting) device physics in domains relevant for quantum computer development - 8+ years of experience.
- Profound understanding of solid-state quantum computer control approaches and architectures at the quantum plane - 8+ years of experience.
- Ability to link scientific progress and milestones to product timelines and acceleration - 8+ years of experience.
