Rapidly growing STEM publisher seeks an Open Access Commissioning Editor to oversee the content growth of the Open Access journals within the Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. peer-reviewed journal portfolio.


Responsibilities include direct commissioning of appropriate content, in conjunction with the editors, overseeing the editorial process, ensuring swift decision-making and timeliness of publication, and the overall success and integrity of the OA journal program across diverse disciplines. Focus on “transfer & capture” program an essential component of OA portfolio management priorities.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Manuscript Acquisition:
  • Proactively identify and pursue opportunities to acquire manuscripts that align with the scope and objectives of our OA journals.
  • Develop and implement core strategies to attract a high volume of submissions from leading researchers, institutions, and scholarly communities around the world.
  • Foster relationships with authors, editors, and peer reviewers to ensure a steady flow of submissions, and prompt decision making.
  • Develop targeted special collections of articles on a regular basis and work with marketing to deploy calls for papers.
  • Work closely with internal team members to build contact pipelines and successfully meet targets.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of our Editorial Policies and ensure these are consistently followed.
  • Build your knowledge across subject areas.
  • Conduct analysis of relevant scientific fields to identify areas of growth and potential opportunities to drive article submissions across your assigned portfolio.


2. Portfolio Management:

  • Provide strategic direction for the growth and development of the OA journal portfolio, with emphasis on emerging trends and the evolving needs of researchers across (nationally and internationally).
  • Regularly review data showing transfers to our OA journals and work with the referring editors to ensure they are transferring the appropriate number of papers.
  • Regularly review peer review reports and work with Editors and journal administrators to ensure timeliness of decisions (TTFD) and ensure transfer/capture protocols are evaluated regularly and adhered to between flagship and OA titles.
  • Evaluate the performance of individual journals weekly, monthly, and quarterly based on established KPIs, with emphasis on essential performance metrics including submissions, decisions and publication output, citation impact, visibility and readership engagement.
  • Collaborate with editorial teams to optimize editorial workflows, streamline processes, and enhance the overall efficiency of journal operations.
  • Propose and launch new Gold OA titles in close consultation with the VP, Commercial Director

 

3. Quality Assurance:

  • Oversee Editorial performance of Editors-in-Chief; make recommendations for new leadership or to add key decision makers to the helm for optimal performance.
  • Stay abreast of best practices and industry standards in open access publishing, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Monitor feedback from authors, reviewers, and readers to identify areas for improvement and implement appropriate interventions.


4. Promotion and Outreach:

  • Work closely with marketing and communications teams to devise promotional campaigns and outreach initiatives aimed at increasing visibility and awareness of our journals.
  • Engage with academic societies, research organizations, and conference organizers to promote our publications and foster collaborations within the scholarly community.
  • Represent the organization at conferences, workshops, and other relevant events to showcase our journals and network with key stakeholders.


Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in scholarly publishing, particularly in managing open access journals.
  • Proven track record in manuscript acquisition, editorial decision-making, and portfolio management.
  • Strong understanding of academic publishing trends, open access models, and scholarly communication practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels. Must be a team player.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute initiatives to achieve organizational goals.
  • Proficiency in project management, data analysis, and use of publishing tools and platforms.
  • Scientific background a plus but not required


Location:  Hybrid (New Rochelle, NY) or Remote, depending on background
