Lab Technician

Onsite-Wilmington, NC

18 Month Contract Position

Summary

The technician hired for this position will prepare metallographic specimens, and subsequently image them using light optical microscopy. Specimens will primarily consist of zirconium alloy nuclear cladding (not irradiated, i.e., not radioactive), including novel Zr-based alloys and cladding with various coatings applied, both as-manufactured, and following various tests to examine for oxide formation, degradation on materials, and various defects types. The technician will work closely with engineering support, but will also be able to work independently following on boarding.

Essential Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive metallurgical analyses, including microstructural analysis, failure analysis, and corrosion testing of metals and alloys.

Operate and maintain a variety of laboratory equipment, such as sample preparation equipment, microscopes (optical and electron), hardness testers, and other analytical instruments.

Collaborate with engineering team to design and execute experiments, including sample preparation, testing, and data analysis.

Compile and report data in a clear and concise manner, making actionable recommendations based on findings.

Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations in all laboratory activities.

Participate in cross-functional teams to support material selection, process improvement, and product development initiatives.

Stay abreast of technological advancements and best practices in the field of metallurgy and materials science.

Qualifications / Requirements

Previous experience in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

Proven experience in a metallurgical laboratory setting, with a strong understanding of metallurgical testing and analysis techniques.

Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and quality assurance standards.

Proficient in the use of LIMS, analytical software, and tools for data analysis and reporting.

Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on complex projects.

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present findings to technical and non-technical audiences.

Flexibility to work on multiple projects and potentially in different areas beyond metallurgy, depending on project needs.

Local to the Wilmington NC area – no relocation
