Summary:

The Dynamometer Engineer is responsible for maintenance, diagnosis, modification, calibration, and project management for all dynamometer systems. The Dynamometer Engineer will be a subject matter expert on equipment, controls, data acquisition, and supporting infrastructure for dyno department assets including dynamometers, instrumentation, emissions bench, combustion air units, process and chilled water systems, fire suppression, gas detection and controls interlock systems, and any other related systems. (75% of role)

The Dyno Engineer will also support Dyno Technicians during engine testing by helping analyze engine data and performing basic engine troubleshooting and performance evaluation as needed. (25% of role)

Essential Job Functions (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):

  • Maintain and improve test cell reliability and repeatability.
  • Work closely with program engineering to administer verification, validation and development testing support for existing programs as well as implement new processes for future programs. Ensure testing processes created are adhered to and documented.
  • Design, draw, and oversee production and installation of various diverse dyno subsystems including but not limited to - DUT mounting systems, brackets, guards, plumbing systems, and cell modifications.
  • Identify suppliers, obtain quotes, and provide recommendations to help management decide between competing quotes and options. Calculate costs and timelines for projects.
  • Manage projects to meet goals and provide clear recovery plans when goals are not met.
  • Specify, recommend, and maintain instrumentation according to industry best practices and internal test plans. Identify, specify, install and implement instrumentation in support of development programs.
  • Identify all equipment and instrumentation requiring calibration. Identify appropriate calibration methods and intervals.
  • Schedule calibrations and ensure program compliance.
  • Write, edit and implement test scripts to improve test cell operations, reliability and increase development capabilities.
  • Develop a complete understanding of the initial testing, durability, calibration, care and handling of all engines. Collaborate with design engineers and dynamometer technicians to verify testing requirements and verify pass/fail testing results for marine and motorsport engines.
  • Evaluate & ensure compliance engine pass/fail within the discretion provided by program managers. Recommend improvements to test plans as needed for improved data acquisition and testing accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot engines and equipment in the dynamometer area.
  • Assist Engineers from various engine programs to help troubleshoot engine performance issues, with primary focus on verifying proper dyno function.
  • Identify best practices, recommend and identify efficiency improvements, such as setup time and scheduling, and lead projects to improve dyno utilization and thruput.
  • Seek ongoing education to stay continuously up to date on state-of-the-art technology and industry best practices.
  • Assist with creating and maintaining documentation for engine and dyno requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related
  • Experience with modifying and setting up new control systems, specifically AVL Puma, AVL Bobcat and KS Tornado control systems
  • 3-5 years of minimum engine dyno specific experience
  • Familiar with both AC and water brake dynos
  • Motivated individual with a “can do” attitude
  • Self-sufficient and easily adaptable to an ever-changing scope
  • Excellent communicator (written and orally)
  • Must be well organized and understand how to prioritize
