Physical Modeler - Design Studio


Position Overview: The physical Modeler role is critical in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the Product Design team, particularly in both the early conceptual phases and the more technically intensive development stages of projects. This position requires a highly experienced individual with strong technical skills and the ability to engage in spontaneous dialogue around ideas and concepts from a technical perspective. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and possesses the ability to work cross-functionally within a dynamic environment.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Precision Machining: Set up, operate, and maintain precision milling machines to support design and development activities.
  • Tool Selection: Perform tool selections to ensure optimal performance and accuracy in machining processes.
  • Maintenance: Follow maintenance schedules and instructions to ensure equipment is well-maintained, and assist in machine maintenance when required.
  • Work Environment: Maintain a clean and organized work area, fostering a positive and safe environment for all team members.
  • CAD Data Management: Ensure that CAD data is complete and satisfactory for milling components, including closing out models as necessary.
  • Design Support: Assist in designing armatures and collaborate closely with the Design Studio on various projects.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work effectively across different teams within the organization, including engineering and design, to support project goals.
  • Event Planning & Prototyping: Assist in planning events, prototype modeling activities, and estimating task/operation duration.
  • Studio Participation: Actively engage in all studio activities related to the project, contributing to a cooperative network between design and engineering.
  • Technical Specifications: Create various technical specifications to guide design work, including sketching, clay modeling, and 3D data.


Critical Competencies:

  • Mastercam Expertise: Proficient in Mastercam with a minimum of 10 years of experience; knowledge of Catia is a valuable asset.
  • Ownership & Initiative: Demonstrated ability to take ownership of tasks and proactively execute plans with minimal supervision.
  • Engineering Design Solutions: Capable of proposing engineering design solutions that support the broader objectives of the Design team.
  • Teamwork: Strong ability to build cooperation among individuals and departments, sharing information and resources to achieve group goals.
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication, both verbally and visually, with the ability to listen actively and transmit information accurately.
  • Dependability & Reliability: Consistently follow through on commitments and deliver projects and tasks in a timely manner.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to take on a wide range of tasks, adapt to changing priorities, and embrace new challenges and responsibilities.
  • Multitasking: Ability to juggle multiple assignments simultaneously while maintaining high standards of work.
  • Self-Starter: Motivated and energized, capable of working independently or as part of a team, with limited direction.
  • Additional Skills: Knowledge of 3D printing, clay modeling, and painting are advantageous.
  • Software Proficiency: Proficient with Microsoft Office products, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Assertiveness: Willingness to speak out and contribute ideas during discussions.
