Managing Editor Job Summary:
Sparks Group has partnered with a global association based in Linthicum Heights, MD to find a Managing Editor. This will be a hybrid opportunity requiring you to be in the office at least 2 days per week. In this role, you will oversee the entire publication process and management of two journals, encompassing financial operations, content collection, peer review, production, distribution, and editorial development.
Managing Editor Responsibilities:
- Journal Management: Ensure timely publication and quality oversight of both journals, including management of Editorial Boards.
- Financial Oversight: Handle financial functions for the journals, including payments to editors and contractors, budget monitoring, vendor contracts, and annual budget development.
- Strategic Development: Collaborate with Editorial Boards, the Director of Publications, and the EVP to create and implement strategies aimed at enhancing the journals' reach and impact.
- Peer Review and Production: Oversee the peer-review process and production functions, and develop strategies for improving these areas.
- Indexing Applications: Work with the Director of Publications, publishers, and editors to successfully apply for indexing with key databases such as DOAJ and the National Library of Medicine.
- Training and Resources: Provide training for Editorial Managers and create supporting materials for authors, reviewers, and editors.
- Department Modernization: Assist the Director of Publications in implementing innovative practices within the Publishing Department.
- Standard Operating Procedures: Maintain and update standard operating procedures for journal processes.
- Content Collaboration: Identify and leverage opportunities for content sharing across the journal family and other publications.
- Liaison Role: Serve as the primary contact for the journals, coordinating with internal departments (Marketing, Sales, Education, etc.) and external partners (publishers, vendors, etc.).
- Project Leadership: Collaborate with internal teams on joint publishing initiatives, such as Annual Meeting Abstracts and Home Study projects.
- Team Management: Supervise the Publications Coordinator, including delegating tasks, conducting performance reviews, and supporting professional development.
Managing Editor Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Over 5 years of experience in an editorial office.
- At least 2 years of staff management experience.
- Proven experience collaborating with Editorial Boards, senior executives, Councils, and Committees.
- Familiarity with journal profit and loss management.
- Strong copyediting and writing abilities.
- Ability to juggle multiple deadlines and projects simultaneously.
- Exceptional grammar and spelling proficiency.
- Capable of meeting deadlines and collaborating effectively with others.
- Experience with peer review and production management tools.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is advantageous.
