Corporate Counsel Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct legal research, provide analysis, and advise business units on various legal matters.
  • Manage litigation and pre-litigation matters, including settlement negotiations, coordination of outside counsel, and handling indemnification issues.
  • Draft, review, and edit contracts, pleadings, motions, memos, and discovery documents.
  • Advise business units on legal compliance with FDCPA, FCRA, and other applicable laws.
  • Develop and execute defense strategies in litigation, mediation, arbitration, and other legal proceedings.
  • Serve as a liaison and resource for business units, particularly on issues related to debt collection, consumer and business bankruptcy law.
  • Analyze litigation trends, case development, and relevant legislative and regulatory developments.
  • Review and update business policies and procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal laws.

Corporate Counsel Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Membership in a state bar.
  • 3-5 years of experience as an attorney, preferably in creditor rights, consumer law, bankruptcy, litigation defense, administrative law, loan servicing, or financial services law.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially with senior management.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to manage diverse teams and work effectively with outside professionals.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • A proactive, intellectually curious individual who can self-educate on new processes and act as a champion for change.
