A Commodity Buyer in an automotive manufacturing company plays a crucial role in the procurement and supply chain process. The primary responsibility of a Commodity Buyer is sourcing, negotiating, and procuring indirect materials. The role requires effective communication, negotiation skills, and the ability to collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure a smooth and efficient supply chain.

This role is to support Indirect buying activities including MRO, General industrial suppliers, IT, HR, Corporate services, Packaging, Corporate services etc.


• Commodity Strategy: Develop the commodity strategy to encompass several key elements to optimize procurement processes, mitigate risks, and achieve strategic objectives. Help analyze and create, develop a commodity strategy, and ensure alignment with stakeholders.

• Sourcing and Procurement. Identify and evaluate potential suppliers for specific commodities or materials. Negotiate with suppliers to secure favorable terms, pricing, and conditions. Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers.

• Cost Negotiation. Negotiate pricing agreements with suppliers to obtain the best possible terms while considering cost reduction targets. Analyze market trends and conduct cost analysis to ensure competitiveness.

• Supplier Relationship Management. Build and maintain positive relationships with suppliers to ensure a reliable and efficient supply chain. Address and resolve issues with suppliers, fostering collaboration and mutual understanding.

• Contract Management. Draft, review, and manage contracts with suppliers, outlining terms, conditions, and quality specifications. Ensure compliance with contractual agreements and manage contract modifications as necessary.

• Quality Assurance. Collaborate with quality assurance teams to ensure that procured materials meet quality standards and specifications. Monitor and address quality issues promptly, working closely with suppliers to implement corrective actions.

• Supply Chain Coordination. Coordinate with other departments, including manufacturing, logistics, and engineering, to ensure the timely delivery of materials and components. Work closely with cross-functional teams to align procurement activities with production schedules.

• Risk Management. Identify and assess risks associated with commodity sourcing and supply chain activities. Develop strategies to mitigate risks and implement contingency plans.

• Market Analysis. Conduct market analysis to stay informed about industry trends, pricing fluctuations, and emerging technologies. Use market intelligence to inform procurement decisions and strategies.

• Continuous Improvement. Identify opportunities for process improvement within the procurement function. Implement best practices to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in sourcing and procurement activities.

• Cost Reduction Initiatives. Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to implement cost reduction initiatives without compromising on quality. Seek alternative sourcing options to optimize costs.

• Compliance. Ensure procurement activities comply with relevant regulations, industry standards, and ethical practices. Stay informed about changes in regulations that may impact procurement practices.

• Supplier Diversity and Sustainability. Promote supplier diversity and sustainability initiatives within the procurement process. Consider environmental and social responsibility factors in supplier selection.

• Data Management. Utilize procurement and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to manage and track procurement activities, supplier performance, and inventory levels.

• Education: A bachelor’s degree in business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, or a related field is commonly required. Specializations in procurement or logistics can be advantageous. Master's Degree (Optional).


Experience/Requirements


• Procurement Experience. Prior experience in procurement, preferably within the automotive manufacturing industry, is highly beneficial.

• Supplier Relationship Management. Experience in building and managing relationships with suppliers, negotiating contracts, and addressing supplier-related issues.

• Industry Knowledge. Familiarity with automotive manufacturing processes, materials, and components. Understanding of industry-specific regulations and quality standards.

• ERP and Procurement Software. Proficiency in using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and procurement software for data management and analysis.

• Global Sourcing Experience. Experience in global sourcing, including understanding international markets and navigating supply chain challenges.

• Negotiation Skills. Strong negotiation skills are essential for Commodity Buyers to secure favorable terms, pricing, and conditions with suppliers.

• Communication Skills. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are crucial for collaborating with suppliers and internal cross-functional teams.

• Analytical Skills. Analytical skills to conduct cost analysis, market research, and evaluate supplier performance.

• Problem-Solving Skills. The ability to identify issues, address challenges, and implement effective solutions is valuable in a dynamic procurement environment.

• Teamwork and Collaboration. Commodity Buyers often work closely with cross-functional teams. The ability to collaborate effectively is important for success.

• Time Management. Strong time management skills to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and coordinate with various stakeholders in the supply chain.

• Attention to Detail. Attention to detail is critical in ensuring that procurement activities align with quality standards and contractual agreements.
