Overview: A Relay Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of protective relay systems and associated equipment used in electrical power transmission and distribution systems. The role requires a deep understanding of electrical systems, protective relay logic, and control circuits.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Installation and Commissioning:
  • Install, calibrate, and commission protective relay systems.
  • Ensure all equipment is installed according to industry standards and manufacturer specifications.
  1. Testing and Troubleshooting:
  • Perform routine and emergency testing of protective relays to ensure proper operation and reliability.
  • Identify and rectify issues with relay systems, control circuits, and associated equipment.
  • Interpret relay event reports to diagnose faults and develop solutions.
  1. Maintenance and Upgrades:
  • Conduct regular maintenance activities to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of relay systems.
  • Implement upgrades to existing relay systems to enhance functionality and reliability.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, tests, and equipment configurations.
  1. Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to ensure the effective integration of relay systems within the broader electrical infrastructure.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to provide updates on relay system status, test results, and maintenance activities.
  1. Safety and Compliance:
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, industry codes, and best practices related to protective relay systems.

Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in relay testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of electrical power systems, protective relay logic, and control circuits.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and protocols (e.g., IEEE, NERC).
  • Proficiency in relay testing software and diagnostic tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
